BitTorrent users are always looking for new and convenient ways to access and control their downloads on the go. A few days ago I mentioned uTorrent Tiny Client, a simple-to-use Chrome extension that does the trick. Today there's another browser plugin worth taking a looking at, and comes straight from the brilliant minds over at BitTorrent Inc.: uTorrrent Control.

UTorrent Control is a small and efficient add-on for your browser that gives you access to your downloads on the go, and unlike uTorrent Tiny Client it also works on Internet Explorer 8 and above, and Firefox 3 and above.

UTorrent Control features:

Add torrent

Remove torrent

Pause torrent

Check torrent download status

Monitor torrent download speed

Toggle full torrent list

Sync with desktop µTorrent Client

Sync remotely

Launch web remote (remote.utorrent.com)

The plugin includes an optional search engine feature for searching the Web directly in your browser, but it's powered by Bing and will likely just add unnecessary clutter to your workspace.

UTorrent Control only works with uTorrent client version 3.0 and higher so you'll need to upgrade if you haven't already.

Stay tuned.

Easy step-by-step guide that will help you start downloading movies, music, TV shows, and more in no time at all with uTorrent.

For most people getting started with the whole "BitTorrent downloading thing" can be pretty intimidating. Sure maybe some of you had practice with Napster or KaZaA back in the day, but times have changed. Now it's "trackers" and "clients," and the list of new terminology goes on and on. So exactly how and where to begin can be a daunting and intimidating proposition.

So for those of you looking for an easy way to find the path to downloading enlightenment, I present to you an easy step-by-step guide to get you up and downloading in no time at all.

The first thing we need to do is download a BitTorrent client. This is the program that will do the actual downloading for you. There are many to choose from and each has their own positives and negatives, so it's up to you decide which best suits your needs and PC capabilities.

Currently, the most popular client server program is uTorrent because it's relatively simple, effective, and most importantly lightweight. It's small memory footprint consumes only 6MB of memory.

Now the guide below will take you through the uTorrent setup process and beyond.

INSTALLATION & SETUP

To begin, download and install uTorrent.

Now we need to configure it to work properly and at a maximized setting based on your PCs internet connection speed.

1. Select "Speed Guide" from the Options Menu as shown below.

2. Run a "Speed Test" and note your upload connection speed.

3. Select your the connection speed determined above in the drop down menu as shown.

4. Choose a port number between 49512 and 65535(the recommended range). Also, the selected port must be forwarded if operating behind a router. As you can see in the picture, I went ahead and used port 49789 and then TESTED it.

....this is the message you should then see in your browser

5. Lastly, it asks if you want to "Enable Encryption." The reason for this is that many ISPs block or throttle BitTorrent connection speeds and this setting helps mask it.

To test if your ISP throttles BitTorrent traffic CLICK HERE.

6. Click "Use Selected Settings"

PREFERENCES

There's a number of different features and options, but the only we'll concern ourselves with is where you want your downloads to go. You'd be surprised at how many people have trouble locating where their downloads are at.

1. Select "Preferences" from the Options Menu.

2. Here simply enter the folder location for where you want your downloads to be put in.

That's it. You're finished. Congratulations.

So Where Do I Find Stuff to Download?

Check out our extensive list of BitTorrent tracker sites for the latest and greatest in download sites. Also, I suggest reading our story on Private versus Public Tracker Sites to get an idea of what to expect from each.

How Do I Download It?

First you need to find what's called a BitTorrent tracker site, it's a site which has the actual torrent files that allow users to connect with one another and share data (CLICK HERE FOR TERMINOLOGY).

In the picture below I use the LegalTorrents site since I show actual downloading and wish to of course comply with copyright laws. As shown I selected the download arrow in order to download the torrent file and thus the corresponding content.

The files should then appear in uTorrent and begin downloading.

For a more honest representation, here's how it would look if you wanted to download content from The Pirate Bay, the world's largest BitTorrent tracker site.

Using "Star Wars" as the search query, I selected a Star Wars e-Book to download.

Then simply select the file and then DOWNLOAD THIS TORRENT.

As an avid BitTorrent user there's nothing more important than being able to control my downloads on the go. The uTorrent Tiny Client Chrome extension does just that, and more!

The uTorrent Tiny Client extension add the µtorrent web UI to your Google Chrome web browser, giving you virtually complete control of your downloads on the go.

Available commands include:

Stop / Start / Pause / Pause all torrents / Resume all torrents

Force Start / Resume / Force Re-Check Remove / Remove data / Remove torrent / Remove torrent + data /

Set Label / Remove Label / Filter the list by Labels / categories

Global speed limit download / upload

Set priorities for individual files in torrents

[gallery link="file" columns="6" orderby="rand"]

The best feature is streaming playback of your media files (.MP3 and .MP4 by default, VLC Multimedia Plug-in required for .avi and other formats).

Never one to rest on its laurels, BitTorrent Inc. is once again trying to reshape P2P file-sharing with the release of Share, a unlimited personal media sharing app.

Powered by the BitTorrent protocol, Share allows you to create private file-sharing networks with family and friends.

“Share is the culmination of over a year’s research into personal media sharing. We have always known that BitTorrent is one of the fastest ways to send or receive a large file. With today’s consumer cameras/video recorders producing stunning quality, traditional media sharing requires concessions,” said BitTorrent Inc.'s Shahi Ghanem, the company's chief strategist. “With Share, you don’t have to crop photos, reduce resolutions or cut video length to easily share something with your friends, family and colleagues. It’s much faster than traditional ‘cloud’ solutions and easy for anyone.”

Drag and drop what you want to share and choose who you want to share it with.

There's a convenient Facebook plugin too that you can use to share with your Facebook friends.

If you're going to share files with certain people on a regular basis you can create a group and invite others to join.

Some of the feature include:

No Limits: With no limits on number of sends, file size/quality, or number of recipients, users may send HD videos, high-res photo collections, and other oversized files – with no fees.

Ultra Fast Downloads: Share is built on top of an innovative file-sharing technology that is already used by over 100 million people every month. Friends may now download the biggest files without the endless wait.

Private: Choose exactly who may access shared files. Set up groups to share with friends, family and co-workers, or just send a file to one person.

Social and Fun: Friends may comment on the files in real-time. Share is interactive, conversational and social.

Graham adds that Share was born from BitTorrent Inc.'s belief that "...personal media sharing would be an ideal extension to our existing µTorrent and BitTorrent software."

And as for being an "ideal extension," the company adds that Share will eventually be integrated into all existing BitTorrent and µTorrent software clients when the software finishes its alpha testing phase.

Stay tuned.

This past October ago I mentioned how uTorrent was taking the BitTorrent client experience to the next level by testing out a new subscription-only premium version called uTorrent Plus. For $24.95 per year subscribers get access to additional features and functions that provide an enhanced user experience.

Today BitTorrent Inc. announced that uTorrent Plus is leaving the beta testing phase and opening to the public.

"µTorrent Plus is a notable step in our strategy to make it easy for people to shift their personal media from their PC and play it on mobile devices, TVs, connected devices and more," said Shahi Ghanem, chief strategist at BitTorrent. "Whether it's personal content sent by a friend or indie content found on the Internet, people are too often frustrated by file formats that aren't supported by their favored device."

The four main new features include:

File conversion: Transcode downloaded files right within the µTorrent Plus software. Initial supported codecs include: MPEG-4, H.264, Theora, and VP8 video codecs; MP3, AAC and AC-3 audio codecs. With these codecs, µTorrent Plus enable users to convert files and shift them easily to Apple, Android, Xbox360 and Playstation 3 devices.

Antivirus: Powered by BitDefender, the built-in antivirus automatically scans downloaded files for hidden viruses and malware and handles any detected infections.

Integrated HD media player: Download a file and play it immediately in standard definition or high-definition, within the µTorrent software.

Remote downloading: µTorrent Plus users will unlock a new feature in the popular µTorrent Remote Web service. In addition to nearly full remote control of their home torrent client through any supported browser, µTorrent Plus users will also have the ability to download files from their home torrent library to the remote computer.

One of the problems, for example, with public tracker sites has, and always will be, viruses and other malware. UTorrent Plus helps to remedy that problem.

Also, with the array of protable devices I have, and I'm sure I'm not alone, what could be more conveneient than being able to download, convert, and then push content to whichever device you choose?

"Our goal was to enhance µTorrent to be a powerful tool that lets you free your personal content from the PC," said Jordy Berson, director of product management for µTorrent. "Plus adds key features needed to accomplish this, and then adds security to keep you safer."

The BitTorrent Mainline client also has a Plus version now available for those interested in upgrading.

BitTorrent Inc. is definitely taking the influx of Apple products seriously. It recently launched long-awaited stable versions of the uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline BitTorrent clients, and now it's announced a complete makeover of the Web interface for iPad users.

BitTorrent Inc. added uTorrent Remote support for the iPad and Android back in June of last year, but it never focused solely on the iPad user experience until now, introducing a drastic redesign that is optimized for touchscreen usage.

"We’re happy to release a gorgeous new Web interface for µTorrent, optimized for the iPad for a great touch experience," says Brett Nishi, Director of Product Management, in a press release. "It comes complete with all the functionality in the PC-based µTorrent Remote.

UTorrent Remote for the iPad looks pretty amazing. All of the control options are listed in a sidebar on the left-hand side for ease of control swiping, and the features appear simple and easy to use.

Once again BitTorrent Inc. manages to roll out a "little more love" that Mac users have been clamoring for.

Stay tuned.

A stable uTorrent for Mac BitTorrent client has been more than three years making. An alpha version was leaked back in 2008 and a beta version was officially released this past Spring. Now, at long last BitTorrent Inc. has announced the release of stable versions of uTorrent for Mac along with its BitTorrent Mainline client.

Up until BitTorrent users on Macs were more inclined to use stable versions of other BitTorrent clients for Mac like Transmission (the most popular) or XTorrent.

It was the growing usage of Apple products by BitTorrent users that helped spur their progress.

"In the BitTorrent community, the number of users with at least one Apple product is growing at a pretty quick pace," writes Brett Nishi, BitTorrent Inc.'s Director of Product Management, in a blog post. "And we hear you loud and clear with your requests for a little more love."

The new stable versions of uTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline BitTorrent clients for Mac allow users to enjoy some of the same functions and features that their PC counterparts have for years.

The new Mac features include:

RSS Feeds and Smart Feed Subscriptions: Subscribe to torrent RSS feeds inside µTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline. Set up Smart Feeds to auto-magically fetch torrents and start downloads.

Scheduler: Pre-schedule start, limit and stop activity for downloads at regular intervals throughout the week. A valuable feature if you’re stymied by metered and shared networks.

Remote + Mobile: Simple, secure access to µTorrent and BitTorrent Mainline clients from anywhere. No complicated network configuration required. Add and manage torrents from any browser, mobile browser (iPad and more), and even a native Android app.

Advanced controls and info: More control and information about what’s happening behind the scenes. Upgraded logging features too. And, now access double-secret-super-advanced preferences (they’re hidden behind CMD+OPT+,). Use wisely.

One of the main features uTorrent for Mac users have been clamoring for is a speed scheduler. With today's growing trend of bandwidth throttling and data consumption fees it's important that users are able to automatically start, stop, or limit their BitTorrent activity as necessary.

So it would seem that BitTorrent Inc. has indeed filled Mac users' requests for a "little more love."

No word yet on when or if Mac users will see a uTorrent Plus versionthat was rolled out to PC users earlier this month. The subscription-only version of the BitTorrent client adds features like integrated virus protection, remote file transfer, and seamless format conversion for transfer to smartphones and gaming consoles.

Stay tuned.

uTorrent is taking its BitTorrent client experience to the next level with the introduction of a new subscription-only model that will offer subscribers an array of enhanced features.

uTorrent Plus is a premium version of the widely used BitTorrent client, and includes a number of interesting new features like virus protection, remote file transfer, and transcoding. The yearly subscription fee is a purported $25 per year.

The four main new features include:

Virus Protection

Integrated video playback

Remote file transferring from your client to wherever you are in the world

Seamless transcoding between video and audio formats for many devices, including smart phones, and game consoles

An early pre-Alpha version launches today, and though it's currently still invite only, they've been kind enough to give me 500 free invites to dole out to my readers (use this PROMO LINK).

So what does it all look like? I've taken it for a test drive for the last week or so, and I have to say I'm impressed.

VIRUS PROTECTION

I don't "patronize" public BitTorrent tracker sites so virus protection has never really been a big concern of mine. But, I hear repeatedly from - shall I say - "less tech savvy" BitTorrent-using friends of mine, and all seem to cite The Pirate Bay and Demonoid as their go-to sites for content.

You can turn the anti-virus option on and off as you see fit, and will auto-update if you so choose.

REMOTE FILE TRANSFER

Now you can stream or transfer files from your home PC to anywhere else in the world.

TRANSCODING

Though long been a mainstay of the Vuze BitTorrent client, uTorrent has never allowed users to convert and transfer content to portable devices and gaming consoles. For those that download content and want to watch it on the go, uTorrent Plus takes some of the headache out of the process. All you have to do is connect your device and then drag and drop what it is that you want transcoded and transferred.

.

All in all I like uTorrent Plus and the idea of offering premium options for a fee. The only question is will it divurge too much from its ubiquitous low memory footpritn that has always made it so popular.

Stay tuned.

All you have to do is connect your device and then drag and drop what it is that you want transcoded and transferred.

.

All in all I like uTorrent Plus and the idea of offering premium options for a fee. The only question is will it divurge too much from its ubiquitous low memory footpritn that has always made it so popular.

Stay tuned.

Long ago BitTorrent surpassed direct connect-style downloading to become the preferred method of file-sharing because of its speed and ability to share large files, especially video.

Now that I've already given you a roundup of the top five BitTorrent clients for Windows and Mac it's time to compile a roundup of the top five BitTorrent clients for Linux.

1. uTorrent

uTorrent is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch. It’s simple, easy to use, and sports a low memory footprint.

Features:

Streaming: Watch videos within seconds with progressive downloads – no need to wait. Especially great for previewing a file before committing to the full download.

Remote Access: Start, stop, and monitor torrent downloads on the go. Access your client from any Web browser, or download our Android app.

Ratings and Comments: Leverages the collective wisdom of the community to ensure the quality and security of downloaded torrents.

Drag-and-Drop Sending: Easily send massive personal files – e.g. home movies, cell phone videos and hi-res photos. Select a file on your computer, drag it into the µTorrent “Drop files to send” box and a Web link is yours to share.

Portable Mode: Run your µTorrent client directly from a USB key and take it with you anywhere.

uTorrent also sports the App Studio. Launched last November, the App Studio enables one-click downloads of content and features right inside uTorrent. Offers downloads of music, movies, and books as well as social media apps like TorrentTweet or antivirus apps like BitDefender’s VirusGuard.

Moreover, it’s built for speed and you can leave it running in the background without having to worry about it slowing down your other tasks.

If you’re looking for a guide on how to set up and use uTorrent we have one HERE.

2. Transmission

Transmission is a fast, easy, and free multi-platform BitTorrent client with a focus on being lightweight yet feature-filled.

Features:

Uses fewer resources than other clients

Daemon ideal for servers, embedded systems, and headless use

All these can be remote controlled by Web and Terminal clients

Local Peer Discovery

Full encryption, DHT, µTP, PEX and Magnet Link support

Transmission has been built from the ground up to be a lightweight, yet powerful BitTorrent client. Its simple, intuitive interface is designed to integrate tightly with whatever computing environment you choose to use. Transmission strikes a balance between providing useful functionality without feature bloat.

Long ago BitTorrent surpassed direct connect-style downloading to become the preferred method of file-sharing because of its speed and ability to share large files, especially video. As such, over the years the popularity of certain BitTorrent clients has ebbed and flowed depending on user tastes (Azureus anyone).

So for those unfamiliar with which to use, or for those regular users perhaps looking to see how your favorite BitTorrent client stacks up the rest I've compiled a list of the top 5 BitTorrent clients to see which is the right one for you.

1. uTorrent

uTorrent is, in my opinion, the best of the bunch. It's simple, easy to use, and sports a low memory footprint.

Select a file on your computer, drag it into the µTorrent "Drop files to send" box and a Web link is yours to share.

Moreover, it's built for speed and you can leave it running in the background without having to worry about it slowing down your other tasks.

If you're looking for a guide on how to set up and use uTorrent we have one HERE.

2. Vuze

Formerly Azureus, Vuze was the first BitTorrent client to offer a wide variety of features and plugins. The downside is the relatively high memory usage, but for those where this isn't an issue Vuze offers a far more compelling BitTorrent experience.

Features:

Vuze Meta Search offers aggregates results from a variety of top sites.

Automatically adapts to optimize for your network.

Watch in Full Screen HD (1080p).

Can play virtually any type of video file - AVI, XVID, Quicktime, and more.

Offline playback (on planes, trains, automobiles)

Drag-and-drop content to play back on the device of your choice: iPhone, iPod, iPad, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PSP, and TiVo.

Vuze Remote: control your Vuze client from any computer or smartphone with a web browser.

RSS Feed support

Moreover, Vuze is the BitTorrent client to choose if you wan't a more robust downloading experience.

3. BitTorrent (mainline)

The official BitTorrent client has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years, offerring new features and options that set it apart from the rest. It's all part of "Project Chrysalis," its effort to achieve the "next generation" of the BitTorrent Mainline client.

Features:

RSS feed support.

Download and upload scheduling.

Transfer caps to avoid ISP overusage fees.

Add Torrent from URL.

Intelligent: BitTorrent auto-adjusts bandwidth usage based upon your network and the Internet.

Plug-n-Play.

Advanced: BitTorrent leverages µTP, the latest BitTorrent protocol. BitTorrent maximizes the use of network bandwidth while reducing congestion & it doesn't interfere with your other surfing.

Low memory footprint.

The BitTorrent Mainline client also supports the same App Studio I mentioned about uTorrent. The App Studio lets you add new features, skin your client and more.

4. BitTornado

It's popularity has slowly waned over the years, but it's still enjoys a loyal following. It doesn't feature the fancy bells and whistles of the others like uTorrent and Vuze, but it's fast, reliable, and easy-to-use.

Features:

Upload/download speed throttling.

Option of Disabling and Setting Priority of Files in any torrent.

Detailed information about connections to other peers.

UPnP Port Forwarding (Universal Plug and Play).

IPv6 support (OS support required).

PE/MSE support.

Quick resume.

The only real downside to BitTornado is that it's a little bit too "lightweight" in my opinion. I love programs that use minimal resources, but memory has become cheap enough these days that unless your running an old tower with 512k there's no reason to choose BitTornado.

5. BitComet

BitComet also still enjoys a loyal following, and offers search features far different than the others. BitComet lets you browse some 14 tracker sites for content, including Demonoid and BTJunkie with minimal configuration required.

Features:

HTTP/FTP Download.

Preview while Downloading: Preview of avi, rmvb, wmv and other video files is available during downloading process.

Magnet URI: Start BitTorrent download without .torrent file any more, using DHT network.

Disabling or Setting Priority of files in torrent: Files can be skipped for downloading, or set to higher / lower priority, allowing you to select which file finish first.

Select a file on your computer, drag it into the µTorrent "Drop files to send" box and a Web link is yours to share.

Downsides? Ads. The program sports annoying in-client ads as well as taskbar ad popups that wholly ruin the sanctity of P2P.
