Never one to rest on its laurels, BitTorrent Inc. is once again trying to reshape P2P file-sharing with the release of Share, a unlimited personal media sharing app. Powered by the BitTorrent protocol, Share allows you to create private file-sharing networks with family and friends. “Share is the culmination of over a year’s research into personal media sharing. We have always known that BitTorrent is one of the fastest ways to send or receive a large file. With today’s consumer cameras/video recorders producing stunning quality, traditional media sharing requires concessions,” said BitTorrent Inc.'s Shahi Ghanem, the company's chief strategist. “With Share, you don’t have to crop photos, reduce resolutions or cut video length to easily share something with your friends, family and colleagues. It’s much faster than traditional ‘cloud’ solutions and easy for anyone.” Drag and drop what you want to share and choose who you want to share it with. There's a convenient Facebook plugin too that you can use to share with your Facebook friends. If you're going to share files with certain people on a regular basis you can create a group and invite others to join. Some of the feature include:

Graham adds that Share was born from BitTorrent Inc.'s belief that "...personal media sharing would be an ideal extension to our existing µTorrent and BitTorrent software." And as for being an "ideal extension," the company adds that Share will eventually be integrated into all existing BitTorrent and µTorrent software clients when the software finishes its alpha testing phase. Awards Season is Upon Us, Screeners Soon to Follow

For long-time observers of video piracy, the traditional end of the year awards season provides a very interesting peek into the interplay between the movie industry and the file-sharing scene. Even as studio executives continue to push onerous DRM schemes on end users, the reality is that most commercial films find their way online well prior to their official DVD release date. Somewhere along the chain of production, film industry insiders get their hands on high quality digital copies of Hollywood’s movies and start to share them, and as we all know, it only takes one copy to provide the source for millions of downloads. Studio spokespeople rarely draw attention to this fact, as it tends to undermine their constant pleas about the need for consumer level DRM, when in fact almost all mass online infringement completely bypasses these systems.

Even worse for the studios is the annual dynamic by which the “screener” copies that are sent around to Oscar voters too lazy to actually see movies in theaters, very rapidly end up online as well. Despite a number of efforts by the Motion Picture Academy to stop theseembarrassing leaks, they continue year after year, and highlight the extent to which even some of the most well-connected film industry members have been exposed as file-sharers.

I will be tracking how quickly the Oscar contenders show up online, and in what formats over the next few months. But to start things off, I’ve tabulated the release history of some of the likely Oscar films, at least as chosen by the Golden Globes. This should provide us with a good baseline for observing how things develop over the next few weeks as the Oscar race heats up and the nominations are announced. Please let me now if I’ve missed anything so far.

Japanese Cops Arrest 10 File-Sharers

Accused of using “Share” P2P application to illegally share copyrighted material, and for the first time a person is accused of illegally sharing Nintendo Wii games

Police in Hokkaido, Akita, Tokyo, Saitama, Mie, Kyoto, Hyogo, Tokushima, Okuyama and Saga, Japan have arrested (GOOGLE TRANSLATION) a total of 10 people for using the Share P2P application to illegally share copyrighted material online.

Share is a closed-source P2P application developed in Japan as a successor to the Winny P2P application after its author was arrested back in 2004 for developing a program that helped users commit copyright infringement.

Some of the pirated items include movies like “Death Note” and “Death Note: The Last Name,” as well as games including “Dragon Quest IX,” “Wii Music” and “Wii Sports Resort.”

According to the Anti-Counterfeiting Association which made the announcement, it is the first time a person has been accused of using file-sharing software to illegally share Nintendo Wii games.

The arrested include:

1. 40-year-old male company employee from Sapporo (Ranma ½ television series)

2. 23-year-old unemployed male from Toride (Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito)

3. 47-year-old male company employee from Nagano (8 musical tracks from Victor Entertainment, SME Records, Sony Music Records, Avex Entertainment)

4. 23-year-old male company contract employee from Sayama (music from Ai Otsuka and Kobukuro, Back to the Future Part III, Death Note, Death Note: The Last Name, others)

5. 37-year-old male local government employee from Tsu (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)

6. 44-year-old male company employee from Jōyō (Lorelei)

7. 37-year-old self-employed male from Yokohama (Wii Music, Wii Sports Resort)

8. 57-year-old unemployed male from Komatsushima (unspecified television anime)

9. 40-year-old unemployed male from Okayama (Dragon Ball Kai, Fresh Precure!, Fullmetal Alchemist)

10. 30-year-old male game center employee from Chikugo (unspecified anime)

The sad thing is that for all the money and effort wasted on the investigation and law enforcement by the ACA, Japanese police, and soon the country’s court system there will be no measurable decline in illegal file-sharing in that country. All that will happen is 10 mainly UNEMPLOYED individuals will have their lives ruined further ruined financially.
