Soulseek

Soulseek is a free ad-free spyware-free p2p program good for music. Soulseek comes with some features that no other p2p program even comes close to. Soulseek is very good for downloading full albums as users can share folders for their albums. Soulseek also has a neat easy to use interface which you can make it the way you want it. It shows all the chats that are available so you can go in and search member's files to see if they have the file you want. Soulseek does have a good selection of songs to choose from but as I can see Soulseek does not have multi-source downloading that other p2p networks have.

Soulseek has other neat features like the wishlist so if you cannot find a file you can add it to your wishlist and it will tell you when the file is available. Soulseek is a good p2p program to have around if you like to download full albums and music.

Some of the latest features of Soulseek include:

  • Status bar with overall activity of your client.
  • UPnP Manager (automatic port forwarding)
  • Configurable Incoming TCP port.
  • Search for files in rooms and in userlist.
  • Faster connection and synchronization.
  • Give Privileges: Give some of your own privileges to a buddy.
  • Scrolling ticker in rooms.
  • The Matchmaker now supports "Dislikes" as well.
  • Faster processing of incoming search requests.
  • Automatic crash reporting.
  • Firewall and router configuration tester.
  • More efficient threads management for Windows 98SE/NT/2000/XP with Overlapped Sockets.
  • Fix for transfers frozen in "Awaiting User" state.
  • Fix for slow windows refresh on some system.
  • Fix for negative speed rating.
  • Major code cleanup and lots of reengineering for threads and events usage.
  • … and a lots more!

One of the things that makes Soulseek unique is our community and community-related features. Based on peer-to-peer technology, virtual rooms allow you to meet people with the same interests, share information, and chat freely using real-time messages in public or private.

A lot of people like it, I found it to be substandard. To each their own I guess

If soulseek ever gets the thousands of users that it once had it is THE GREATEST MUSIC sharing P2P program available. It still is with probably always less than 2 thousand people total. We used to have rooms with over that so get on bus folks. I can have 10-20 complete albums in a half hour if I am running searches nonstop. CHECK IT OUT!

I used this a lot back in 2002/2003; it had a ton of files, but searches only reported a fraction of them. And, I had a hard time getting my connection to download anything at reasonable rates. Now, in 2009, there are probably fewer users, but searches are so much better. I can be selective about bitrates, and still get good download speeds. And, now people can connect to me; I always have uploads queued. Hooray for slsk!

the best thing about soulseek is there is no rules and no rulers
each person comes as they are
so you can act as wild as you want
it is relationship based one on one p2p
so making friends with people who you want to share and not allowing those whom you do not

soulseek is anarchism in action , mutual aide, voluntary association, security culture

Number one tool for searching rare music. Nothing comes close.

There are two servers now, so download both of the clients. The GUI is damn horrible, and with Vista keeps this terrible beeping sound. The connections are pretty slow too.

Anyway. Underrated, but you can still find almost anything you'll seek online. I hope they keep it alive. It's coming back 'tho.
