Data caps are slowly gaining hold amongst most ISPs as a neutral means for fighting network congestion post-FCC ruling that censured Cox for throttling BitTorrent.
AT&T, Comcast, and Time Warner each have data already caps in place, and now it’s been confirmed that Charter Communications has joined the list.
According to DSL Reports, Charter will implement a 100GB cap on customer connection speeds of 15Mbps or less, and a 250GB usage cap for 15-25 Mbps. It’s new $140p/mo 60Mbps connection won’t have any limitations.
"In order to continue providing the best possible experience for our Internet customers, later this month we will be updating our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to establish monthly residential bandwidth consumption thresholds," confirmed Charter Communication’s spokesperson Eric Ketzer Ketzer. "More than 99% of our customers will not be affected by our updated policy, as they consume far less bandwidth than the threshold allows."
Overage fees haven’t been discussed yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
