RIAA Fires MediaSentry

There are reports surfacing that says that the RIAA has fired a so-called p2p investigator. Ray Beckerman says that they were being sloppy.

The report comes from CNet which cites the Wall Street Journal. MediaSentry is a company the RIAA hired to, among other things, to investigate alleged copyright violations.

The company was brought under serious scrutiny over accusations heard in court like not actually being a licensed investigator to begin with. Late las year, the RIAA said that it would stop p2p lawsuits in favour of disconnecting people from the internet (though current legal battles between RIAA members and accused people are still being fought) Already, during the Jammie Thomas case, the “Making available” theory, which would circumvent the legal issues of proving that copyright infringement is actually taking place, was dealt with a serious blow especially after losing the ability to appeal the judges decision to basically strike it down.

The interesting part is that MediaSentry is being called sloppy. A while back, Media Defender has been, at the very least, just as sloppy when they not only let 9 months of internal e-mail and an entire Skype conversation leak onto ThePirateBay, but their source code and their dignity. Media Defender had to resort to lawsuits just to fail to keep their internal secrets down let alone keep their clients so-called intellectual property unreachable through file pollution. As of yet, there’s been no known reports of the RIAA taking a hard look at this company though, but who knows? With the RIAA changing tactics against file-sharing, it might create a little less job security.

Then again, it’s not like the RIAA isn’t hiring companies to go after alleged copyright infringers. From CNet:

The RIAA said it would replace MusicSentry with DtecNet Software ApS–a Copenhagen-based company the trade group has worked with before, according to the newspaper.
