Zeropaid Interview: Jed McCaleb from eDonkey2000

Zeropaid.com finds out the truth about eDonkey2000 going decentralized with Jed McCaleb, lead programmer on eDonkey2000.

Zp: How do you feel about EdonkeyBot. Were you mad when it almost
“killed”
your network
?

Jed McCaleb: I think it is cool when other people write tools that work with
something
I’ve made. It is better than the thought of someone being just a user
since
this involves much more effort on their part. Well I think there are a
lot
of non-public servers out there that aren’t effected by the bot, but
the
public network is doomed to die anyway. Maybe not die but it certainly
can’t grow much further.

Zp: Rumors are that they are going to charge for their software. Would
you be
angry that nothing is going to your network?

Jed McCaleb: No I think this is funny.

Zp: What do you think of sites like ShareReactor? Was this your vision
when
you created eDonkey2000?

Jed McCaleb: If the content was non-copyright infringing then I would say
ShareReactor
was a good idea.
Yes I think it is kind of silly for the searches to be done in the
client.
You don’t have anywhere near the information or guarantee of quality
that
you do from a website. I’m actually involved in a project now to put
legitimate films (ie we will have the right to distribute them) on a
website with the transfer being handled by the donkey.

Zp: 177,298 users is pretty good. Is this a maximum that can connect to
Edonkey2000? Or is Edonkey2000 fully expandable and very dynamic?

Jed McCaleb: Well eDonkey2000 wasn’t really intended to be one giant network. The
idea
was that people would form smaller subnets of content they were
interested
in. But this hasn’t really happened so far. So basically the problem
now is
that a server that joins the group of public servers gets more or less
hammered by all the users out there. This obviously can’t scale forever
and
is pretty much at its limit now.

Zp: What are some features that you plan to implement into future
versions of
eDonkey2000?

Jed McCaleb: Well I’m not going to do too much more to the donkey until the new
network
is up and running (see below). But at some point I want to modify it to
fill the roles that the new network wont be good at such as smaller
private
networks.

Zp: Some people would say that the GUI in eDonkey2000 is horrible, and connecting is a pain. What do you have to say to them, and what are some fixes?

Jed McCaleb:(see below)

Zp: Are you ever going to go Decentralized?

Jed McCaleb: Yes this is what I’ve been working on for the past month or two. It is
just
entering the Alpha test stages now. We expect a public beta around the
middle of May. It should out preform all the other decentralized
networks
out there now. It will end all the pains of connecting to the network
and
the GUI is being completely redone to be nice this time.

Zp: Ever read Perfect 10?

Jed McCaleb: No. Whats that about?

Zp: On your website, it says you need an IRC service. Maybe you can give
a
description of what you need and maybe someone from Zeropaid.com has
information to help you and your program out.

Jed McCaleb: We actually will be moving to liquidirc on Monday.

Zp: Anything you want to say to Zeropaid.com, and the rest of the world?

Jed McCaleb:Not now. debugging….
