Mininova Introduces Free Distribution Platform for Copyright Holders

Offers features like detailed download statistics in addition to the obvious like free exposure and bandwidth.

BitTorrent tracker site Mininova has just launched a free distribution service for copyright holders that allows them to deliver their content to the over 35 million monthly visitors to the site. It may sound odd to regular BitTorrent users since that what it would already appear to do, but in this case it gives participants download data statistics and "featured" status.

"Distributed content will be marked as featured, listed at the top of the frontpage," reads the site.

Participating copyright holders get the advantage of reaching the masses without the usual marketing or distribution costs. In addition, they will also be provided with detailed statistics showing how often their content is downloaded and from which countries.

Mininova spokesman Niek answered a few questions for Jon over at P2PNet:

p2pnet: This looks like a genuine effort to provide a no-strings-attached P2P distribution system for independent music at no cost to musicians. Is that how you see it?

Niek: Yes. The idea is to build the ultimate platform for producers who want to distribute their content to a broad audience for free.

p2pnet: How do you plan to stop people from uploading DRM-protected content or spam?

Niek: We review every CD application.

p2pnet: Can anyone use this? Like, ordinary people with a love of music making songs in their bedroom studios?

Niek: Everybody can apply for a CD account, as long as the content is of high quality and interesting for the majority of Mininova users.

p2pnet: If this a free service, how will you support it?

Niek: We hope the current web-page advertisements will be enough.

I submitted an application on behalf of my buddy DJ Destructo Bunny to see how the service will work and to see first hand what tangible benefits it can have for an up and coming artist such as he.

Stay tuned.
