Drummer Lars Ulrich acknowledges that file-sharing is “part of how it is these days.”
Metallica has seemingly come a long way since back in 2000 when it led the charge against illegal file-sharing.
It was their case against Napster that really made Metallica the face of file-sharing critics and really incensed a lot of their fans who couldn’t understand how a band that had already made millions was concerned with making millions more. It became the poster boy for greedy artists everywhere and caused many to turn their backs on the band that had turned it’s on them.
Things at Metallica Inc. then changed a few months ago when Ulrich said in an interview with Rolling Stone that “We’ve been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in twenty-seven years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet.”
Since both of these artists allowed fans to download a recent album for free the comments were understood to mean that it had a change of heart and was starting to look favorably upon file-sharing.
Fast forward to yesterday, when Lars gave an interview with San Francisco-based radio station Live 105 to promote Metallica’s upcoming “Death Magnetic” album, and again we hear him having a new found laid back attitude when it comes to P2P and file-sharing.
“Listen, we’re ten days from release,” Ulrich said.
“I mean, from here, we’re golden,” he added. “If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. Ten days out and it hasn’t quote-unquote fallen off the truck yet? Everybody’s happy. It’s 2008 and it’s part of how it is these days, so it’s fine. We’re happy.”
Well, “Happy Days” are already here because it leaked to BitTorrent several days ago. The leak reportedly occurred after it was accidentally sold in a French record store, the buyer then wasted no time in sharing his treasure.

I think deep down file-sharing still irks Metallica Inc. and they only say they don’t care because they’ve finally realized that there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.
“Happy Days” Metallica.

Well its about time! Finally metallica got their heads out of there ass about this stuff. Oh ya and the album rocks!! me tallica has risen from the dead!
… heh heh.. …once a turd …. always a turd! …
Meh….the “leak” is a 128k WMA file that was transcoded to a 192 MP3. Thanks but no thanks. I’ll wait a few more days before I steal it.
Er…nevermind. Looks like someone did the right thing and posted a decent copy.
metallica yawn. I’d rather listen to Growling Machines myself.
@ Tic3: Please explain what you mean. Thanks.
In re metallica: Their music both sucks and blows at the same time that’s the only accomplishment those turd burglars can brag about.
The metallica___Death_Magnetic__2008___mp3___320_kbps_ that was posted on 9/02 is transcode from the 128Kbit WMA version.
Apparently someone got the CD and encoded it as a 128k WMA file. Someone else took that 128K WMA file and re-encoded it as a 320 K (not 192 like I originally posted) mp3 file.
Several reports from different people (on different sites) seem to confirm that. Reports of pops clicks and other audio artifacts in the files abound.
If you decide to steal it check the comments from people who have already got it before wasting your time.
(p.s. I agree – metallica haven’t been musically relevant for nearly two decades and I really don’t have high hopes for this despite the rave reviews it’s drawing.)
Yep even Waffles refuses to allow uploads until a quality copy surfaces…………..
I will never listed to metallica again.
I’ve been listening to the new album for a few days now and it’s a really good album. It’s not good as their classic stuff but it’s soooo much better than anything they recorded since …And Justice For All.
It’s not commercial metallica (aka Bob Rock phase) but a good true me tal album.
Unfortunally (for them) I will not buy it and I hope they learn their lesson well. This should be an “I’m sorry” kind of release and be totally free (like the new NIN).
And by the way…anyone cares to invite me to waffles or what.cd?? Maybe soulxtc could help me wiht this?
Thanks and cheers to everyone!
