How to Download & Rip Music From MySpace

posted by soulxtc in guides // 109 days 11 hours 47 minutes ago

A quick step guide that will show you how to grab music from your favorite artists's MySpace page.

There are many audio files available for playback on the venerable MySpace site yet, very few are available as downloads. There's a number of ways to bypass this problem and I will cover two of best the methods here for you to use, the first being the easiest.

METHOD A - FreeMusicZilla

METHOD B - Audacity

FreeMusicZilla

1. Download and install FreeMusicZilla.

2. Open FreeMusicZilla, visit the desired MySpace page, and play the song you want to download. It will then automatically grab whatever music track you selected (FreeMusicZilla also works for Pandora, Last-fm, eSnips, MOG, iJigg, and IMEEM)

3. Select the grabbed music track and press the DOWNLOAD button. Your download should then begin. Make sure you begin downloading the track before the "Leech Timeout" counter runs out otherwise you'll have to refresh the page.

EXAMPLE:

In the picture below I used the MySpace page of my buddy DJ Destructo Bunny. He's a local up and coming hip-hop artist and I urge you to show some support if you like what you hear by either buying a track or two or by trying to check out one of his upcoming shows.

NOTE: FreeMusicZilla places your downloads in the location "C:downloads" by default.

Audacity

1. Download and install Audacity.

yes

2. Now we need to install a LAME MP3 encoding driver so you can save tracks in the .mp3 format.

First download the driver, which you can do here. It's in ZIP file format, so for those of you who are unfamiliar with what ZIP files are, there's a guide here at Zeropaid you can take a look at.

erew

Now drag and drop the driver in the location shown below, "C:WINDOWSsystem."

hjklkj

3. Select "Wave Out Mix" as the audio recording device.

no

EXAMPLE:

Now it's time to find some audio tracks to rip.

A good friend of mine is the lead-singer for a band called The Wagon here in San Diego and has been kind enough to allow me to use his band's music on MySpace for this tutorial.

The image below is of the band's page. Notice how the top two songs are available for download and the bottom two are not. We're going to rip the second song from the top titled "End of Summer," a personal favorite of mine not to mention timely with Summer drawing to a close.

yort

Now with Audacity and the MySpace page open, click the "record button" on Audacity as shown below and then quickly press the "play button" on the End of Summer track. The track should begin to play and thereby be displayed as eloquent peaks and valleys of music in the Audacity track window.

short

word

When the song is finished playing press the "stop button" on Audacity. This will of course stop the recording and allow us to go back and edit the song.

rtu

The reason we need to edit the song is because there will be periods of silence in both the beginning and end of our recording. This silence is the delay in reaction time it took for us to both start and stop the process.

Using the scrollbar on the bottom of the track window, scroll back to the beginning of the recording as pictured below.

dgfd

Using the mouse place your cursor as close to the beginning of the song as possible, then click and drag it all the way to the left and release. We have just selected the silence in the front of the track, which we will now discard by pressing the "delete button" on your keyboard.

rewre

Now we need to do the same thing for the end of the recording. To do so simply scroll to the end of the track and then select and delete the silence as you did with the beginning of the track. It's that easy.

From the "File" tab select "Export as MP3" as shown below.

jhh

It will then prompt you to select a name to save it as, which in this case will be "End of Summer."

yuytuytu

After clicking on the "Save" tab, it will then ask you to "locate the LAME MP3 encoder" we just installed.

jhgjhjghjghj

Hopefully you remember where we just put it but, just in case I'll show you where to go.

tuuuuu

uutttt

fhghgff

Once this is done it'll begin to encode the track and turn it into an MP3, the music file type necessary to play on your iPod or whatever media player of choice.

fgghhhhhh

And with this ladies and gentleman the track is ready to go.

mmiii

Admittedly, configuring the Audacity program to perform as necessary initially takes a little while, but once this is done future recordings or "ripping" of audio files will be a breeze.

  • #1    Great guide, but wouldn't it be much easier to simply use Firefox, with the "Download Helper" extension? It does work well on MySpace, but not so much on LastFM :(

  • #2    @guitrman

Well, it cant be much easier than FreeMusicZilla, which also has the benefit of not adding another extension to Firefox.

  • #3    well now the music business as we know it is over, this is the triton bomb that destroyed it within a day

I guess the goal now is to spend 2MM to make a record and market it

give away as much of it as you can everywhere to anyone who will listen to it.

you as the artist hope that you have enough fans who want to pay to come to your shows

you as the artist hope that your shows are sold out and fans buy your merchandise, t shirts, cups, ect.

or you are so popular that promoters pay you a flat fee to perform, much like an actor would get for being in a movie

and you get your royalties from radio stations, tv networks

other than that I have no clue on how an artist can make a dime in this business anymore

I also guess that within 2 years all labels will be out of business

and the only new releases will come from those who suck but they think they are stars

can you imagine a world full of tila tequilas

    no more mtv cribs

the only stars left will be in sports and acting

well that is where we are heading

Pro-RIAA......the guy hasnt a clue...it doesnt cost 2 million to make and market a record, the guy hasnt a clue, I know actualmusic artists who tour and make real money,

ARTISTS dont make squat from iTunes or CDs.

I have personally put my own money into investing into artists careers

how much have you put in ?

and it cost's millions to break a new artist, radio play, mtv airtime

and you thought artists blow up because they are lucky.

  • #8    If I had any idea 20 years ago this is how it would all turn out I would have majored in film and tv or gone to school to

    become a director instead

in the last 5 years I have lost millions

and the hundreds of millions around the globe have spoken, they want

    free music,

    free software

but they will still pay to go a theater and watch a movie.

  • #9    On another note WE meaning me and my associates are building up a class action suite against ISP's Yahoo Google MySpace and anyone else we feel contributed to our downfall

we have billions so we can win

our other business is casinos and oil

The case will not be filed for another 3 years, we are waiting for more pirating to occur, we need a real strong case to even

    make it worth our while.

R u high? Kid? MySpace (yuck)? Why all the assumptions, you know me nor more than I do you.

Never said I was any of that, Only that I KNOW guys who have bands and are all faring nicely............file-sharing is how they get their music out there WITHOUT RECORD LABELS it is their PROMOTION and MARKETING, they make most of their money from touring, the remainder being from merchandise like tees, CDS, stickers, etc.

    READ THIS> http://www.zeropaid.com/news/9586/Artist+Praises+File-Sharing+for+Increasing+Ability+to+Tour/
posted by soulxtc 108 days 7 hours ago
  • #11    First off I listened to a few artists who are all of file sharing,

well they call themselves artists but they cannot sell out shows, get placements on TV or Film or get a record deal to save their lives,

    why ?

because they are not fully developed and not being fully developed will most likely mean they will never get a real career as an artist,

one of them bragged on how he got 150,000 listeners, okay if that is the case he should be on tour with tiesto, digweed, chemical brothers,

I doubt he can even get 20 people to his show, I can tell he does not know how to produce or mix,

I know by now if any real label guy heard his music he will be written off for life for wasting the execs time,

this business is not a game and myspace and other sites treat it like one they give anyone a chance to get out there, the problem is that 99.9% of them are not ready.

Why can't you give me real example of real artists

and this rock band, they do not need cd sales, they need to give away their music for free,

give me kid rock, metallica, hoobie stank, u2, madonna give me some real bands or artists that have really paid their dues, I mean really really paid their dues and they will be around for at least 5 years from day one and they make music that lasts a lifetime.

    believe what you want

file sharing is hurting the industry end of story

file sharing is stealing from the stars income stream and anyone else who benefits from it

    yes file sharing is great.............

you as the artist get 2MM free downloads but only 200 buy tickets to go to your 10 shows, how can you support yourself on that ?

this is the reason for proper training and development time which only labels can provide

    labels

which will be non existent in a few years at the rate this is going.

and yes I will agree with this

for the 99% of the artists out there that are not ready yet

their music needs to be given away it is so bad it needs to be sorted out by the fans and the fans can tell the artist or band how much they suck and what they can do to improve it on the next round.

however for the 1% talent that are true stars, with and without label deals that have spent tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands if not millions on their careers

they need to have a special label that says

    NO FILE SHARING

    everyone needs to respect that

for us, the asshole executive cigar smoking bosses

file sharing is not hurting our lifestyles, or lively hoods

we will still have the same highend estates, cars, private jets for years to come, we made our money a long time ago.......

file sharing is hurting the little guy, the roadie, tour manager, accountant, security, assistants, gardeners, nannies ect........

we have gone back to making films

at least we know their income stream will never die.

  • #12    here is my final point

this is an artist that whose music should be bought legally

    http://www.djsasha.com/fr.php

click on the tour and gallery link

he plays in front of 40,000 people

    different artist same name

    http://www.sashasf.com/

he is smart he is giving away his music as he should he plays in front of a few hundred

so you tell me what is the difference ?

why should you get free music from the first artist who only a 10 years ago was selling millions of records

  • #14    I have a link for you this is a perfect example on the damage itunes and downloading is doing to artists

    http://perezhilton.com/2008-08-18-jared-speaks

if they had sold 5 million records they would have has made a good living

EMI has spent at least 20MM on them overall, tours, mtv vh1 airtime, late night commercials are not free

to record a record is the least expensive part of the equation

and they wonder why after 2MM in record sales overall they cannot get paid

they are done, after EMI no major will touch them

I know the executives who tried to explain what happend to Jared, why he needs to sell at least 5MM records to get paid

he will not listen or he thinks they are ganging up on him and his band

nothing could be farther from the truth

labels are like banks and they want their original investment plus interest
posted by sarge2004 105 days 12 hours 30 minutes ago
  • #15    another point

andy gould, music manager for linkin park, rob zombie and others is selling his place, or trying to at least

do you think he is upgrading ? or downsizing ? they are not selling enough records to support him or them,

so what do you think ?

    http://www.betweendoors.com/clients/8581/mls.htm

also 20 records have been canceled this and next year from MAJOR stars, some of them are your favorites

now they may do some records on their own but because they are signed by a label they cannot do it

next year you are going to notice a large hole in talent

so you tell me that file sharing is not harmful

president of Geffen just sold his at a loss and I hear he is moving into a condo

again, if file sharing is helping acts get out there and sell records why are 2 major icons in the music business

selling their properties in the worst RE market in history ?

  • #17    @sarge so obviously file sharing is not harmful to the movie industry? based of course on the RE activities of a few music industry insiders?
posted by dubstylee 105 days 5 hours 44 minutes ago
  • #18    not yet because movies are still making billions at the box office they still have decent sales on dvd and they will still end up on prime time tv

another example of the damage file sharing has done to the music biz

some of these producers at one time commanded over 100-50k per song, they have produced number one to top ten hits for 50 cent, Jay Z, Biggie Smalls, Puffy, Dr Dre, Emimem and the list goes on

you could not even hear their latest tracks a few years back without a sit down meeting with their managers, you also had to be a signed artist to a label with a real budget but on this site they are letting you hear everything, a few of these producers are going to lose their homes, rides, money and bling

this is to surreal for most of them to comprehend

call anyone of them up and they will gladly fly you out and play you their tracks in a multi million dollar studio

but beware, these producers are very hardcore, they come from the streets and most of them are strapped to the nines so you do not want to be lying to them.

hiphop, urban industry is slowly going out of business, the only aspect from it that is still keeping it alive is ringtones

  • #21    I would say that former software and music millionaires were 25% of the RE buyers across the US, since they ran out of money they

could no longer afford to upgrade or buy more properties, so they have been selling quietly for the last 2 years and now to many of them cannot pay the bills so they are selling and taking huge losses, some cannot give their places away.

You the fans and consumers afforded these artists, producers and programmers lavish lifestyles, and now their lifestyle is fading away, so again tell me on how file sharing is not causing any damage to the economy.

meh. i guess it's not a terrible thing that anyone can release music these days. if you want to sing you should go for it. i miss when everyone's music was distinguishable and voices were UNIQUE.

not a fan of heidi or her music.

  • #23    File sharing doing no harm yea okay:

A woman in the U.K. has been ordered to repay developer Topware Interactive after distributing the firm's Dream Pinball 3D to a peer-to-peer filesharing network, reports the Telegraph.

In all, the unnamed woman has been ordered to repay the developer nearly $30,000 by London's Patents County Court: roughly $11,325 in damages and around $18,607 in "costs and disbursements."

This judgement comes as the firm wave of results in Topware's quest to out filesharers. The firm has launched suits against 100 people suspected of sharing the developer's software in recent months.

  • #24    For all the woes the "music industry" claims they are having, the independent labels have business' that are exploding. There is an obvious disconnect between the "industry" super star and listening public. The "industry" has backed fewer styles of music and a constant string of wannabes that even the "industry" claims need heavy promotion to make up for missing talent. Even kids can see through that kind of guerilla marketing. Anyone older can remember the days when "industry" backed and supported the adventurous and undiscovered and talented musician. Music is their commodity, selected based on graphs of what they think is already popular. Even their data set is skewed with bot hits to produce charts. Their own narrow-minded exclusivity eliminates anything promoted and sold on the internet, including Radiohead's Rainbows until Radiohead signed a deal for a physical cd to be sold in stores. All the albums sold online went uncounted by the "industry".

It is not the music-buying public that created the business model demanding a tiny select handful of superstars to make millions from music. The internet has democratized the field and thousands of talented musicians have the ability and possibility for making money in music that the "industry" had no interest in promoting because they didn't fit whatever their accountant said was should sell.

A quote I've enjoyed was "no one cried when the fridge but the guy delivering ice out of business" from Pirate Bay. It is very possible for a musician or band to produce a high quality recording in the corner of their bedroom, press the discs, get it placed with emusic, itunes, amazon and operate a webstore. They would need to sell 1/100th of what the "industry" label needs in order to see a profit. They would also retain all their own rights. There are business' they can contract with to provide help with production, mastering, design and packaging. They would still see a far larger profit with a tiny percentage of the sales the "industry" gobbles up.

I am not saying the "industry" is totally dead. For big, mega stars there is no distrubtion network capable like the major labels. But that's a far cry from representing "90% of all legitimate sales in the U.S." when they exclude every digital recording and purchase on the internet. For all the whinning the "industry" has done, they still can not deliver a recording in the forum I want to hear or what I want to hear. Instead, they have responded by saying anything other than what THEY want to offer, is illegal. That's a crock.

With that attitude, the "industry" deserves to wither away to a faded memory along with their 'superstars'. And that is what's happening. I haven't risked my computer by buying protected discs. I don't recognize most major labels stars. The "hit" charts are bogus just as playlists on radio. I do not want to be told what to listen to or buy. And I do buy music.
