Google Currents: App for Mac, Android Gives Sites a “Magazine-Like” Feel

Google Currents lets you explore news from a variety of sources with the swipe of a finger.

Google, never one to rest on its laurels, is once again pushing the boundaries of content discovery with its new Google Currents app for both Android and Mac platforms. The new app features content from over 150 news sources including Popular Science, PBS, Forbes, TMZ, and yours truly – ZeroPaid.

What Google Currents does is turn RSS feeds, either the ones professionally customized like the sources above or ones of your choosing, into a magazine-like experience. Sites like ZeroPaid, for example, are given a whole new feel, especially on tablets.

Now there are three types of news editions:

  • Publisher – Sites that professionally create an edition maximized for each platform (Android phone and tablet, iPhone, and iPad).
  • Google trending – Google Currents uses Google search technology to hourly build a set of editions tracking the five most recent trending stories in categories such as world, entertainment, sports, science, and more.
  • Favorite blogs and feeds – Take any RSS feed and give the site a magazine-like feel.
All sources are free, of course and are devoid of all the ads and clutter that are commonplace on most sites. That alone is the biggest sell of Google Current: easier reading!

Google Currents allows you to read content offline, and share interesting articles with family and friends. It also syncs your subscriptions across devices.

Be sure to check out the ZeroPaid edition and stay up to date on the latest news from or to have important guides like our How to Watch Football Online for Free handy at all times.

Stay tuned.

I've been interested in P2P since the early, high-flying days of Napster and KaZaA. I believe that analog copyright laws are ill-suited to the digital age, and that art and culture shouldn't be subject to the whims of international entertainment industry conglomerates. Twitter | Google Plus

not our government. Youre corporations block content geographically so they can sell it to dif distributors in each region, sticking to their old outdated business model. Now they are also trying to limit what devices can view what web content.

Yah, but not sure why Google would be feeding into that corporate scheme. "Do no evil" right?

Another stupid Geoblock. Not available in Canada, because that makes a lot of business sense in this modern day and age. Just saw the newest stupidity, youtube mobile blocking. Seriously? Because geolocks are dumb enough, you want to further affect your profit stream and exposure with mobile locks. Shit content creators are idiots, no wonder their business is going in the toilet.

Geoblock? That is dumb. I guess your govt doesnt want you to see "American" news. Lame. Time to fire up the VPN?
