Top 5 Free Weather Apps for Android

A review of some of the best weather apps for android smartphones around.

With the wet and cold winter season already upon us it’s as important as ever to know what the weather’s going to be like outside so one can plan their day accordingly. Depending on where you live and what you do for a living, the weather can have a big impact on what kind of day you’ll have, and reliable weather forecast information is vital to it all.

There are tons of weather apps for Android smartphones available, but which are the best to use? And in particular, which are the best free weather apps for Android smartphones to use?

I’ve gone through dozens of them and sorted the good from the bad to save you time. I’ve listed the pros and cons of each and included screenshots to give you an idea of what to expect.

AccuWeather for Android

AccuWeather for Android is probably my favorite of the bunch. It’s a free weather app for Android that has all of the features and functions I’d need packaged in a clean and sleek user interface.

An interesting option is the ability to share weather data with family and friends via email, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

Save up to 10 favorite locations that show current temperature along with a short description.

Pros:

  • Doppler radar
  • Weather alarms
  • Day and night forecasts
  • Current news and broadcast-quality weather videos.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t support pinch-to-zoom on Doppler radar.

My Weather Mobile

MyWeather Mobile for Android is free weather app for Android that offers a more customized weather data experience than most. Users can automatically sync the app with their MyWeather.com site account settings so that they can have access to important weather data wherever and whenever you want.

Pros:

  • Doppler radar
  • Save unlimited locations worldwide
  • Temperature in the notification bar
  • Detailed current weather conditions
  • Futurecast maps

Cons:

  • No news and or weather videos

Weatherbug

Weatherbug for Android is a free weather app for Android that’s probably one of the more widely used weather apps and for good reason: It has a ton of features and functions that the others simply don’t have.

Weatherbug offers everything from weather cams and live Doppler radar to video forecasts and weather alerts.

Want to share current weather information, forecast, alerts and weather cam views with friends and family? Well, you can do that too.

To be honest, there’s not much Weather bug doesn’t do, and for some that’s the problem. It can be a real memory hog if some of the app’s settings aren’t tamped down accordingly.

Pros:

  • Live local weather (10,000 weather stations in North America in real time)
  • Doppler radar
  • Weather cams
  • Weather alerts
  • Video forecasts

Cons:

  • Large memory footprint

The Weather Channel

Unsurprisingly, the Weather Channel offers a weather app for Android of its own. The TV channel that offers nothing but weather news 24/7 puts that same information in the palm of your hand.

“The Weather Channel’s staff of 200+ meteorologists, along with our patented ultra-local TruPoint(sm) technology, allow us to provide you with the weather tools you need to plan your day, week, or even the next hour,” it boasts.

The Weather Channel for Android app is not as sleek as some of the other waether apps for Android are, but it does have a certain quality of data that sets it apart from all the others. With it at least you can count on the fact that the data is vetted by a large team of on-staff weather professionals – meteorologists. The same can’t be said of the others.

Pros:

  • Doppler radar
  • Video forecasts
  • Weather alerts
  • Temperature in the notification bar.

Cons:

  • Inability to save favorite locations.

GO Weather

GO Weather is a free weather app for Android that is a bit different from the rest because it also offers live wallpaper and desktop widgets that are quite visually stunning.

It only offers basic weather data like current and future conditions, but for many that’s all that’s needed. They don’t need fancy weather cams or Doppler radar to get them through the day. All they need is a quick rundown of what to expect so they can plan accordingly, and be able to do so with little effort. GO Weather guarantees to show you the weather with little effort.

Pros:

  • Live weather wallpaper
  • 3D high-definition weather videos
  • Live, local weather conditions and forecasts
  • Cached weather data for offline viewing

Cons:

  • Lack of Doppler radar
  • No weather cams
  • Inability to save favorite locations
  • No weather alerts
  • Large memory footprint
