MPAA Creating Movie Links Site to Combat Piracy

Search results will give users a legal destination to find a given movie be it by download, theater ticket, or by renting or purchasing the DVD.

The MPAA is finally starting to realize that people are watching movies online not necessarily because they don't want to pay, but because of the convenience and simplicity that it affords people.

Users can watch a virtually limitless number of movies without ever having to leave their home, and apparently many don't realize that unless you pay a fee to do so, with a few exceptions it's most likely illegal.

The MPAA wants to make sure that the entertainment industry is properly reimbursed for any and all movies you watch online so they have kindly decided to create a yet to be named website that visitors can use to make sure that they watch movies from a legal and approved source.

Visitors to the site will be able to search by movie title what the search results pointing to legal options that include theater tickets, legal downloads

Currently unnamed site would let users search by film title and then provide links to all the legal options available including download, purchasing theater tickets, or renting or purchasing the DVD.

I'm not sure how much of an impact it will have on fighting online piracy, but at least it's a first step towards realizing people are increasingly watching and downloading movies online.

  • #1    well it might work... if the legal version downloads quicker and are better quality, then yes this is a much better way to go about fighting Piracy CONSTRUCTIVELY ...of course it's never going to be the complete answer and you're never going to stop file sharing completely but i do appreciate this effort a lot more rather then being persecuted about it... Has anyone seen this new advert on TV? 'knock off Nigel downloads knock off films'... LoL what ever man! downloading free copies of stuff is not a knock off product!!! if no one got payed for it then it's just a free copy of a dvd that someones gave you that it!... and second of all it's the original copy of a film not a replica item like a fake ipod from china that looks real but isn't... so don't try and call me I'm a scaff for downloading the original copy of something real!

  • #2    It would work better if the site was not owned by the MPAA, but instead by a totally independent company. A "service" owned by the MPAA is pretty much a phishing site.

  • #3    NETFLIX already does this. Not current movies, but pretty close considering how quickly movies come out on DVD. I agree, though: better if it's not owned by the MPAA. Also, I'd like it better as a service rather than on a per movie basis.

  • #4    Damn!!! That is the first GOOD idea those idiots have had!!! Why did I get involved in P2P? Because there was no legal way to get a movie out of the Vault for a daughter that wasn't born when Disney put Cinderella in the Vault.
