Mininova Adds Bookmarks, Remote Downloading

The popular BitTorrent tracker site adds new features and functions that further set it apart from all the others.

Mininova has introduced several cool and useful new features for BitTorrent users to enjoy. The first is personal bookmarks that of course lets you save torrents for later browsing and downloading. The second is remote downloading, and is certainly a more useful and powerful addition.

How does remote downloading work?

It works by subscribing to the personal RSS feed your bookmarks generate, with your BitTorrent client automatically downloading the content so long as it’s actively running (check out my guide on RSS feed configuration).

You can also share this feed with family and friends in case you want to start your own recommended files feed.

Mininova’s blog has a quick walk though of how to set up the personal RSS feed which I’ve reprinted here for your convenience.

Go to the “My bookmarks” page we just described, and copy your “personal feed” URL. In uTorrent, click the “RSS Downloader” button and add the feed URL from your clipboard.

Now, go to “Favorites”, add a new filter (the name doesn’t matter) and enter “*” as “Filter” and choose a download folder at “Save in”. You’re done, click “Close” to make

Now, if you’re at work and see the latest album of your favorite featured artist, just hit the “Add to bookmarks” button. The torrent is added to your bookmarks and personal feed, and within a few minutes your BitTorrent client at home will refresh the feed and notice the new torrent. Your client will then start downloading the torrent in the background, so when you come home you can listen to the album right away. No need for WebUI’s, port forwarding, and exposing local computers in your home network.

I’m not sure how safe or useful it is to be able to browse Mininova and download content remotely while at work or school, but it certainly is a nice feature to use while on vacation, which I just happen to be on right and so am am currently using to grab missed TV shows.

Either way, what’s not to love about having more BitTorrent downloading options in life?
