The agreement between the EU and US is reminiscent of the Echoleon controversy of mid to late 90s. According to Wikipedia in 2001 the Temporary Committee on the ECHELON Interception System recommend that citizens routinely use cryptography on there communications to preserve their privacy. Still a good idea.
