A few days ago, we talked about the new Swedish legislation known as the Lex Orwell legislation that could turn Sweden into a sort of surveillance society. Now, ThePirateBay has recently joined calls to stop it.
The legislation in question would allow for the worlds fifth largest super computer to monitor its citizens though many forms including the internet. Many civil rights activists have condemned the legislation describing it as, among other things, “like wire-tapping without a court order” and “in breach of ECHR”
during our previous we noted that the administrators of ThePirateBay know all to well what it’s like to be spied on. Now it seems as though the administrators are now taking a stand against the Orwell legislation.
From their blog:
There is a new law being voted for on the 17th of June here in Sweden. The law would give the government the right to listen to all telephone and internet traffic that crosses the borders outside of Sweden. In reality – it’s basically all traffic in Sweden since we’re a small nation and Internet is global.
The post also says that ThePirateBay wants everyone to read up on what all this means. Not only that, but they are also calling on everyone to make their voices heard on the matter since it’s “a major threat against our civil rights”
The post also points to a new Swedish website called StoppaFRAlagen which is also available in English thanks to the Google translator. The website aims to inform people on the new legislation and how to contact respective representatives on the matter.
It seems that debate is really heating up on the Swedish Surveillance laws now. ThePirateBay says that people will have until the 17th to make their voices heard, after that, it will be too late.
