Where to Find Free AND Legal BitTorrent Downloads

A list of 7 top BitTorrent tracker sites that offer music, movies, TV shows, games, and more.

Finding a decent selection of BitTorrent downloads that are both free and legal can be a challenging proposition for many including myself. Sure it’s easy to point to BitTorrent tracker sites like Mininova or The Pirate Bay as places to find just about anything under the sun, but it’s usually copyrighted material and so downloaders face tests of both conscience as well as their ability to evade the prying eyes of copyright holders, law enforcement, ISPs, and perhaps even meddling parents.

So thus arises the need for places where free AND legal BitTorrent downloads can be found. The following is a list of 7 worth mentioning and a description of what types of BitTorrent downloads each has to offer.

1. Legal Torrents

Cartoons, books, games, movies, music, pictures, sounds, and TV shows.

2. Legit Torrents

Movies, music, games, anime, books, applications (WIN, MAC, LINUX).

It’s my favorite of the bunch.

3. Etree

Music, music, and more music.

“This site is provided by the etree.org community for sharing the live concert recordings of trade friendly artists,” reads a message on the homepage.

It’s a community where users post lossless concert recordings of their favorite artists which, among others, include: Radiohead, Primus, 311, Black Crowes, Ben Folds,Blues Traveler, Phish, Jack Johnson, Modest Mouse, Matisyahu, Queens of the Stone Age, Widespread Panic, and Ween. Not a bad selection right?

4. Public Domain

Classic and b-rated movies.

5. Ants Marching

Live concert recordings of Dave Matthews Band.

This site is dedicated to die-hard Dave Matthews Band fans, aka the “Ants Marching” community. The site requires registration which is fairly quick and painless.

6. BitTorrent Inc.

Movies, music, games, and TV shows.

It’s free stuff so the selection and quality of content can be a bit lacking. Nonetheless it’s FREE and LEGAL so it’s worth mentioning.

7. Vuze

Movies, music, games, and TV shows.

From the people behind the Azureus BitTorrent client, Vuze is an open online media platform that offers a diverse and substantial selection of free and legal content. It can also be accessed from within Azureus itself.

So there you have it, a list of 7 of the top places to find free and legal BitTorrent downloads.

  3. DrewWilson

Jamendo is another good legal BitTorrent site which features electronic music (largely a French site but some English). It also has ED2K links as well.

  4. JosefStalin

WOW! Finally I can download public domain films from 60 years ago! First stop anything with the Ritz Brothers! AWESOME!

Also Im pretty sure that bootleg recordings of bands are illegal. Remember that episode of Whats Happening where Rerun is forced by some street tough to record a Doobie Brothers concert? And then Michael Hossack or somebody sees him fumbling with this huge 1980s tape recorder stops the show and lectures Rerun right in the middle of the god damn concert on the importance of intellectual property? Yeah thats my source for this being illegal.
