5 Top Video Players for Android

A quick rundown of the top five video player apps for Android around.

With the Android OS  growing in market share these days, more and more smartphone users are in need of apps for Android that help them perform tasks like media playback on the go.

I’ve taken the time to sort through all the free video players for Android available, and whittled the pile down to a list of what I consider the top five of them all.

1. mVideoPlayer

mVideoPlayer is a free video player for Android that works as advertised. Features support for subtitles, Imdb.com search, and responsive, intuitive user controls. Also has a lot of options for you to tweak to make the app fit your needs perfectly.

2. MoboPlayer

MoboPlayer is a free video player for Android that promises video playback without conversion, “anytime and anywhere.” Offers built-in subtitle support as well as streaming video support via HTTP and RTSP protocols.

3. VLC Player for Android (Unofficial)

VLC Media Player has long been one of the most popular and widely used media players around. Referred to as the “swiss army knife of media players,” it plays virtually every type of media imaginable. Already available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, fans have been eagerly waiting for an Android version to help round out their ability to enjoy media on the go. An official version just barely entered a private beta testing phase, but in the meantime developer Austen Dicken has released an unofficial “pre alpha” version to hold fans over.

4. RockPlayer Lite

RockPlayer Lite is a free video player for Android that supports virtually every media type, negating the need for transcoding or format conversion. The “high performance media player supports almost all video and audio formats. Features on-screen volume and brightness control options along with subtitles support. Only downside is that it’s ad-supported, but may be not an issue for those looking willing to put up with ads for a feature-rich experience.

5. RealPlayer Beta

RealPlayer Beta is a free video player for Android that is one the more established media player apps around. The user-friendly media player lets users enjoy videos, music, and even photos. RealPlayer includes a playlist editor, widgets, searching, and content folder selection. For those looking for a media player with a social networking component, RealPlayer Beta lets you share media with friends and family on Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and Picasa.

Do you have a favorite video player for Android that isn’t listed?

Stay tuned.

I've been interested in P2P since the early, high-flying days of Napster and KaZaA. I believe that analog copyright laws are ill-suited to the digital age, and that art and culture shouldn't be subject to the whims of international entertainment industry conglomerates. Twitter | Google Plus
