Anders Weberg Releases Latest P2P Art, ‘Emphasis’

Swedish artist continues his “aesthetics of ephemerality,” art made for – and only available on – P2P networks.

Anders Weberg is a P2P artist that has utilized BitTorrent as a medium on which to put his work in an ever expanding virtual global “gallery”of sorts. He calls the internet the new “streets of today,” and therefore considers his use of BitTorrent as part of his work to be an an expression of his love for “…street art, graffiti and performance art.”

“For the last 10 years I have been fascinated about the net culture and how it has developed and how the boundaries between offline/online is being erased,” he said in a past interview. “That and being a fan of street art, graffiti and performance art I just transformed it into the streets of today, The Net.”

The theme for his fascination with P2P Art is what he calls “aesthetics of ephemerality,” art made for – and only available on – P2P networks. The original artwork is first shared by the Weberg until one other user has downloaded it. After that the artwork will only be available for as long as other BitTorrent users share it with others.

Weberg notes: “Also how most of the users treat their downloads ephemeral. That’s how I got the idea of making a film that is supposed to be used that way. Download it, share it if you like or just delete it. If you like it, keep it. The aesthetics of ephemerality.”

To my amazement, and I’m sure to Weberg’s to some degree, all three of his works are still being seeded on The Pirate Bay. It could mean that the file-sharing community does have an appreciation for art after all, that it’s not always about endless amounts of anime, porn, and CAMs.

“Emphasis”

His latest work is called “Emphasis” and is described as a 60 minute audio-visual excursion. I’ve included a short video excerpt along with more exact details of his latest piece.
