Security researcher following the hacktivist group since at least the end of May appears to be the one behind massive release of group’s IRC chat logs; exposes leadership hierarchy, co-founders, and identifying data on each.
It seems a security researcher under the alias “KillerCube” is actually the one responsible for allegedly exposing the identities of the hacktivist group LulzSec’s leadership, and has even gone a step further by outlining what he believes is its leadership hierarchy.
Earlier I identified the person responsible for the pastebin dump as purported “ex-marine intelligence,” and self-proclaimed “good hacker” Th3J35t3r (The Jester), but it turns out that KillerCube was the one behind the leak.
“Everyone keeps saying that the jester did that stuff on Sabu but he didn’t,” he told me in a email exchange. It truns out he’s right, and even updated the pastebin account data to prove it.
In any event, when I asked what his motivation was for monitoring and exposing LulzSec he replied that he’s “hoping that open information and collaboration can lead to the identification and arrest of this group.”
“I am just a security researcher that has been following Lulzsec since the end of May,” he told me, adding that he “decided to make it public so that I can hopefully get feedback from others that know how to search for this type of information.”
Where it gets further complicated is his research alleging to identify LulzSec’s hierarchy.
“Sabu as [sic] the leader and Topiary as the next in command,” reads a pastebin post. “Then we have joepie91 or 92, kayla, storm, trollpoll, tflow, pwnsauce, Neuron, hsien, kl0ps, Avunit, io, and Recursion.”
It appears that tflow, Sabu, Topiary, and Kayla are the four co-founders, if you will.
Jun 04 08:28:31 <Topiary> hmm not sure who IS LulzSec really… tflow/Sabu/myself/kayla started
If this IRC chatter wasn’t enough, Sabu also mentions the LulzSec attack on the FBI earlier this month.
Jun 03 23:31:32 <Sabu> you realize we smacked the fbi today
Jun 03 23:31:36 <Sabu> this means everyone in here
Jun 03 23:31:42 <Sabu> must remain extremely secure
He goes on to remind everyone that their VPN is their “weapon” and that they must always “stay behind” it. “Without your weapon you are nothing,” he wrote.
KillerCube goes the extra mile and releases a compilation of data on Sabu, Kayla, Topiary, Storm, and Joepie91.
In the meantime LulzSec has mocked The Jester for his “online campaign” against the group, calling him “rather bland and seemingly schizophrenic.” Trouble is, the group doesn’t deny the accuracy of the IRC chat logs.
Either way, is it just me or does the whole thing lack flair? I think LulzSec ough to target the official state websites of countries like North Korea, Mynamar, or the grand daddy of them all – China. Reading about the intricacies of the Arizona police department is just plain boring.
Stay turned.
