I am also a American citizen, it makes me sick to see the influence that usa has on nz. Unless we move away from representitive democracy and into direct democracy the country is going to die.

Not sure when the RIAA/Hollywood studios/etc got their collective fist so well inserted into the U.S. congress to create the grossly overreaching copyright laws but like most cancers, it probably started small, was ignored, spread just a bit more, but no protests or hysterical opposition to it, so the cancer was left to grow. Now the copyright laws are monitored and punished by ISPs, which are merely conduits for material, but they were low-hanging fruit: you get less regulation on prices to customers *as long as* you monitor for copyright infringement. The most egregious overreach is having US Customs and Border Patrol searching all electronic equipment coming into the country for possible copyright violations: laptops, mobile phones, etc – this was able to be permitted under the ever-popular ‘searching for child porn’ clause. Anything they think might be controversial or disagreeable gets added in under some vague notion of child porn. Politicians dont have the balls to question how copyright violations are related to child porn so they pass the laws; the citizens hear child porn and think ‘ok, well, if it protects us from that, it must be a good law’. Now people see why they are chasing after WikiLeaks, Assange and the army guy in US for leaking cables: the embarassment, not for anyone’s safety like they claimed. Cheers.

It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee people, the New World Order is on it’s way whether or not you like or even want it. No one has a choice in this matter, until people ‘wake up’ and see what is actually going on around you. God NEVER, EVER meant life to be a dictatorship, we are not supposed to be evil, your governments have lied to you in the past, they are lying now, and will continue to lie and control our lives unless we speak up, and push back and have nothing to do with them. I thought New Zealand might be safe, but it is a dangerous place also, look at what has been done to Christchurch – I say it was deliberate.

well said Dewdnoc .. I’m also a US citizen and wish our govt would spend its energy taking care of issues in our own country instead of trying to influence the rest of the world.

This copyright business sounds like corporate interests with a thin layer of govt on top. Unfortunately there is a lot of that in US politics now days.

Wonderful job, American Government. Our trust in law enforcement, the judicial system, and our own body of lawmakers is dwindling every day. A growing number of people are no longer proud to be American and Washington is just going to keep trucking along anyway until the situation comes to a head. Expatriation looks nicer every time I read the news.

As a US citizen I’m shocked and disgusted by our government. Here we are having a financial meltdown, and every where you turn you see our government spending time and money somewhere else on something (no offense to you) that has absolutely no effect on the people who their governing. If the US wants copyright laws they should pass them in the US for US Citizens. Period.

From an American, I’m sorry our government are ass-hats. The Bi-Partisan system that runs our offices no longer represent the majority of the people here.
