Uploads Vol 1 of "Ghosts I-IV"to The Pirate Bay.

No longer constrained by meddling record labels concerned more with profits than the art of music, Nine Inch Nails has decided to experiment with the release of their latest album "Ghosts."

Unlike previous albums which were produced and released in the same, tired manner as countless others before it, "Ghosts" will be offered to fans in a variety of formats and pricing options that are certain to please everyone.

Here are the available options :

  • FREE - get Ghosts Vol. I which is 9 high-quality, DRM-free MP3 files and the complete .PDF of the album notes. This can be downloaded from both the album’s site as well as via BitTorrent tracker sites like The Pirate Bay.

  • $5 - download all 36 tracks of Ghosts I-IV and a 40-page PDF booklet. These tracks are available in a number of formats.

  • $10 - get Ghosts I-IV in a 2 CD set. This physical version will be available April 8th, but if you order via the site you can download all the tracks immediately in a variety of digital formats.

  • $75 - the deluxe edition package including the 2 CDs, 1 data DVD with all the tracks in various formats, and a Blu-ray disc filled with ultra high-quality audio.

  • $300 - everything in the $75 package plus 4 LP vinyl (!) records and two limited edition Giclee prints. Limited to 2500 pieces, numbered and signed by Trent Rez (CURRENTLY SOLD OUT).

Ghosts is a four volume collection of 36 instrumental tracks "...composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall," reads NIN's site dedicated to their latest work.

"I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point," explains NIN frontman Trent Reznor. "This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams."

"I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

What makes the release so unique is that NIN seems to be tossing out all of the usual norms when it comes to album distribution and is using a sort of Radiohead/File-Sharing hybrid model of its own design. Reznor, seemingly first among major artists to really acknowledge the music industry as we know it is broken, admirably took issue with record execs who freely admitted they charged more for NIN albums because its fans were guilty of being loyal enough to pay. He even went so far as to tell some concert crowds to 'steal my music.'

By releasing "Ghosts" in variety of prices and formats, he is allowing his fans to pick and choose how they wish to show their loyalty, and to do so in a way that doesn't take advantage of it as before. More importantly, all of the proceeds go directly to the band and not to greedy music labels!

A description of the free download of "Ghosts Vol 1" on The Pirate Bay really epitomizes what NIN really cares about - music, pure and simple.

It reads:

Nine Inch Nails: Ghosts I (2008)

Hello from Nine Inch Nails.

We're very proud to present a new collection of instrumental music, Ghosts I-IV. Almost two hours of music recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I-IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Now that we're no longer constrained by a record label, we've decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them. We encourage you to share the music of Ghosts I with your friends, post it on your website, play it on your podcast, use it for video projects, etc. It's licensed for all non-commercial use under Creative Commons.

We've also made a 40 page PDF book to accompany the album. If you'd like to download it for free, visit http://ghosts.nin.com/main/pdf.

Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you'll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file, but if you're interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5. You can also order it on CD, or as a deluxe package with multitrack audio files, high definition audio on Blu-ray disc, and a large hard-bound book.

We genuinely appreciate your support, and hope you enjoy the new music. Thanks for listening.

  • #2    Bout time an artist did this. I bet they make more money of their music sales this way than with making like one dollar a cd like they used to.
