BitTorrent on the iPhone?

Hacker announces the release of preliminary version of the Transmission BitTorrent client for Apple’s iPhone.

I’m not entirely sure how practical this would be, but an iPhone hacker by the alias ‘core’ has managed to port a version of the MAC BitTorrent client Transmission to the iPhone’s ARM processor, allowing you to run a torrent tracker from your iPhone. The app is still command-line and lacks a nice GUI finish, but it’s a big step.

Warning: Before you go nuts and decide to download the world wide web onto your iPhone, you should keep in mind that AT&T’s EDGE network probably won’t respond well to the excessive traffic, so DO NOT torrent over AT&T’s EDGE network, ever. Just don’t. Use Wi-Fi only for this.

Also, using BitTorrent on the iPhone will wear down your battery extremely fast, so be aware that your iPhone won’t stay charged long while doing this.

You can download the command-line app from their homepage,

I've been interested in P2P since the early, high-flying days of Napster and KaZaA. I believe that analog copyright laws are ill-suited to the digital age, and that art and culture shouldn't be subject to the whims of international entertainment industry conglomerates.

Isn't that going to be expensive? Didn't just recently some guy's wife start downloading a movie on his phone and he went from London to Germany and got whacked with tens of thousands of $$$ in phone costs?

If you are a legit iphone user with one of the iphone plans you get unlimited data but edge is slow anyway.
