Apple Settles EU Antitrust Case Against iTunes

Agrees to drop download prices in the UK

UK digital music fans got a bit of good news today with word that Apple had agreed to begin charging them the same price as their European Union brethren.

EU regulators leveled formal antitrust charges against Apple for charging different prices for the same downloads in different EU countries after a formal complaint was filed by British consumer protection association Which? back in 2005.

Apple said it must pay some record labels more to distribute their music in the UK than it pays them to distribute the same music elsewhere in Europe. The company said it will reconsider its continuing relationship in the UK with any record label that does not lower its wholesale prices in the UK to the pan-European level within six months.

Downloading a single in Britain costs 79 pence compared with 99 euro cents ($1.46) in Europe, a difference of about 9 cents allowing for currency conversion.
