With news that the RIAA claims ripping MP3s from CDs is illegal is it any wonder people are turning to digital distribution?
has the latest Chris tams season music sales figures from Nielsen Soundscan and it isn’t looking pretty for the music industry. From the week of Thanksgiving up through the day before Christmas Eve of this year, 83.9 million albums were sold compared to 2006’s 105.28 million. That’s a decrease of 21.38 million and represents some serious trouble for the music industry as it heads into 2008.
What may be most telling about the current state of music and how it reaches consumers is that Josh Grioban’s holiday-themed "Noel"(????) is the top-selling CD of the year with some 3.5 million album sales.
The decrease in physical sales is surely due to the fact that music buying can be an oftentimes difficult proposition for adults not familiar with the latest "Akons" or "T-Pains" of the music world. With a majority of kids, as well as many adults, owning portable digital music players, a gift card for Apple’s iTunes or other online digital music store allows people to give others the music they really want for Christmas.
Either way, it these latest holiday figures paint an increasingly gloomy picture for the music industry that is still amazingly hesitant to embrace the obvious to all but them future of the music distribution.
It also begs the question when was the last time you bought a CD? Other than local artists, whom it’s important to support, I know haven’t bought one in years.

At the very Least besides dropping the price in half would be to Ditch the Clunky thick Jewell Cases and the Thick Fine print Booklets in favor of the Slimline style Cases and a Get to the Point Cover art st yle like the old Vinyl LP. 2 Sides with maybe info on the inside of the cover when opened. Saves a lot of shelf space if You collect a lot. I had 7000 Vinyl LP’s at one Time ( down to 1200 now) and they took up less shelf space than my 500 cd’s . I don’t even Talk about the Junkie 200 Cassette Tapes I used to Own
It’s not down enough. Keep on Boycotting people. Everyone stop buying cd’s and dvds.
Aw bummer. Did the Music Industry loose some money? WELL WAIT TILL WE ARE DONE WITH YOU!
You are gonna wish your sales were as good as they are now!
I think that there will be CDs for a while yet just like there are still Vinyl Records being made 25 years after they ‘Died’. Vinyl has been around for a longer time than the CD though..
The drop just means that the CD won’t be the Dominant Format any more and maybe it will help to keep all of that Plastic out of the Environment.
Vinyl’s sound is superior to CDs due to their ability to record correctly and some extreme music collectors try to get ahold of the vinyl over CDs any day because of that. CDs are *supposed* to be cheaper to produce and more travel capable however they’ve been replaced by mp3’s for the title of cheaper and travel capable as well as there are some mp3’s that come close to Vinyl’s quality of sound.
Vinyl will always sound better than cd or any digital for that matter although you need some serious audio equipment to give it justice.
Not going into details on why vinyl is better and always will be but those of you who know digital electronics would know why.
Even high end magnetic media has superior sound than the cd. You just can’t beat analogue equipment for sound quality.
Then there are those that debate whether it’s really audible to our ears anyway.

Amen Bro’s Check out the Mix down on any great ’60’s “MONO LP” Vinyl be it Rock R&B or Country and you will feel like You are in the Same Room with the Band. The Studio Techs Knew what They were Doing. The Early Stereo Mixes were Good also though sometime different versions of the same Material. Some Early Stereo mixes did sound Cheesey but after ‘68 were all the Same Mix.
CD’s Sound Great when Cranked Up something that was Hard to do with Vinyl as the “needle Cartridge” sometimes would give “Feedback” !
There’s probably nothing bad about a Vinyl record it’s just a different experience with Music. For a while I thought that the only people that had Vinyl were DJs to Mix with at Dances. Vinyl at my House had been almost un-played since about 1999. I didn’t really know it was still Alive but then the USB Turntables started to come out.
I can see a Josh Groban Xmas CD being Number One in Sales he’s been Mega for a few years and his Fans would want to have a Keepsake Holiday Record of him. I’ve been away from CDs for a long time and when I do get something on Disk I put it on the Computer right away ten minutes or so of Rip and Encode.
I don’t know if it’s all about the Disks though because there were just so many cheap CD Players being pushed on Everyone like the $30 DVD that does CDs and it’s just a hunk of ightweight nothing Plastic.
I do everything at the Computer – Music TV Movies so why bother with Disks and cheap Players? Maybe later when I want the Experience again..
I Think audio CD’s dominance as the main means of distibuting Songs would fade till its a bare whisper…but blank CDS would still be available to those people that buy blanks and burn stuff…then it would also fade till it would be one of those OH MY GOD!!! THOSE THINGS STILL EXSIST?!!…its the pattern of things…every new form of technology is met by resistance…but is eventually adopted…well by now you should know the cycle…tapes to cds…schools to online schools… weird heavy telephones to sleek mobile phones… bill clinton to george bush!…wait that aint right… DIGITAL DOWNLOAD PEOPLE IS THE FUTURE OF MEDIA DISTRIBUTION!…
