With news that the RIAA claims ripping MP3s from CDs is illegal is it any wonder people are turning to digital distribution?has the latest Chris tams season music sales figures from Nielsen Soundscan and it isn't looking pretty for the music industry. From the week of Thanksgiving up through the day before Christmas Eve of this year, 83.9 million albums were sold compared to 2006's 105.28 million. That's a decrease of 21.38 million and represents some serious trouble for the music industry as it heads into 2008. What may be most telling about the current state of music and how it reaches consumers is that Josh Grioban's holiday-themed "Noel"(????) is the top-selling CD of the year with some 3.5 million album sales. The decrease in physical sales is surely due to the fact that music buying can be an oftentimes difficult proposition for adults not familiar with the latest "Akons" or "T-Pains" of the music world. With a majority of kids, as well as many adults, owning portable digital music players, a gift card for Apple's iTunes or other online digital music store allows people to give others the music they really want for Christmas. Either way, it these latest holiday figures paint an increasingly gloomy picture for the music industry that is still amazingly hesitant to embrace the obvious to all but them future of the music distribution. It also begs the question when was the last time you bought a CD? Other than local artists, whom it's important to support, I know haven't bought one in years. You are gonna wish your sales were as good as they are now!
The drop just means that the CD won't be the Dominant Format any more, and maybe it will help to keep all of that Plastic out of the Environment.
Not going into details on why vinyl is better and always will be, but those of you who know digital electronics would know why.
Even high end magnetic media has superior sound than the cd. You just can't beat analogue equipment for sound quality.
Then there are those that debate whether it's really audible to our ears anyway.
CD's Sound Great when Cranked Up, something that was Hard to do with Vinyl as the "needle Cartridge" sometimes would give "Feedback" !
I can see a Josh Groban Xmas CD being Number One in Sales, he's been Mega for a few years, and his Fans would want to have a Keepsake Holiday Record of him. I've been away from CDs for a long time, and when I do get something on Disk I put it on the Computer right away, ten minutes or so of Rip and Encode.
I don't know if it's all about the Disks though, because there were just so many cheap CD Players being pushed on Everyone, like the $30 DVD that does CDs, and it's just a hunk of ightweight nothing Plastic.
I do everything at the Computer - Music, TV, Movies, so why bother with Disks and cheap Players? Maybe later, when I want the Experience again..
Someday soon We will Look Back on that Too !!!!
