BitTorrent Announces 2 New Apps to Share, Play Torrents

Apps studio now offers VLC media player app for one-click streaming of files from the BitTorrent client, and µCast lets you create list of files – TorrentCasts – to share with others.

BitTorrent Inc. has announced the release of several new apps for both the mainline BitTorrent and uTorrent clients that it says will “allow you to do things not before possible.”

“The first is a VLC player app, which automatically displays the torrents you’ve downloaded in a list and allows you to play each through the VLC media player with a single click,” it says.

VLC media player is known as the swiss army knife of media players, playing just about every file type imaginable, even disc images (.iso).

“So, when you click to play a file, the chance of you getting that annoying dialog asking you to find the program to play the file is very small – VLC just knows,” it continues. “As such, it’s a perfect match to the varied file types in the BitTorrent ecosystem. Keeping with the qualities that we know you value, this app is also light and easy to use.”

The second is µCast, which allows users to create RSS feeds – dubbed TorrentCasts – of their torrents to share with others. The way it works is that you create a TorrentCast by selecting the files you want to share. Recipients of your TorrentCast link then load it into their BitTorrent client where they will then be able to access those files.

The TorrentCast is password protected to prevent unauthorized editing of the list by recipients, but recipients can add, as well as edit, files on the list if given the password.

“Also, as part of our effort to help artists reach BitTorrent users, µCast can be used as a way for creators to get their music and movies to their fans,” it says. “How? Just as described above, except that you first have to convert your content to a torrent. Luckily, this isn’t too difficult…even if it sounds a bit technical.”

uTorrent first released the Apps SDK for uTorrent this past July in a bid to allow 3rd party developers to “create a personalized experience” by adding Apps that offer new features and services.

That was followed by last month’s launch of the Apps Studio which now allows uTorrent to “introduce new features and direct access to unique content on an individual basis.”

The new VLC and µCast apps now join other apps like µM ap, Torrent Tweet, and ZuluMusic, but these latest two will likely prove to be the most popular of all.

Stay tuned.
