Wyclef Jean Sells Out? Rocks Out for the RIAA

The Tech Daily Dose blog has a post of with pics of hip-hop star Wyclef Jean rockin’ out for Congressional staffers, lobbyists, reporters and other followers of the entertainment industry at an RIAA holiday party in Washington recently.

I can’t say I’ve ever been a big Wyclef fan,I mean maybe when he was with the Fugees back in the day, but to see him – as a MUSIC ARTIST – perform for the very same people bent on doing all the can to kill it it may my stomach churn (I’m juts glad I haven’t had my breakfast yet).

I mean let’s break down the audience here:

Congressional Staffers

They and their bosses want to crack down on copyright infringement with the newly proposed “Prioritizing Resources and Organization of Intellectual Property Act of 2007” which seeks to strengthen civil and criminal intellectual property laws while ensuring that it gets ample attention from federal govt by creating an office of intellectual property within the White House. In addition, the Feds would be able to seize any equipment involved such as your PC, blank and recorded media, monitor, you name it.

Lobbyists

The people who get paid to whisper sweet nothings in the ears of Congressman all day and have access to government officials on behalf of corporate america – the RIAA and MPAA – that the average person like you and I do not.

Reporters

SO much for fair and balanced, but hey everybody likes a nice party right?

RIAA

What needs to be said that hasn’t already?

The bottom line here is that for all the moaning and groaning you hear from some music artists about how the current state of the music industry is so miserable, then why do some play sycophants and self-perpetuate it by throwing a party for the knuckleheads responsible for it?

Too bad we can’t throw a party and invite Radiohead who seem to be the only ones who actually embrace consumsers, fans, and the future of music.

    I spot six bald people.

Can’t really tell with the lighting however I must say this is a real blow to piracy of Wyclef’s music that is if anyone listens to them anymore anyways.

Of all the two people out there who listen to ‘em I pity you but imagine the three kiss fans beside you and you got yourself the makings of a decent party!

I jest though somehow I don’t think that Wyclef’s gotten any publicity for a while so this has got to look like (to them anyways) a shot of insulin for their ailed career.

  4. Burd

This guy’s from the old school (like Gene Simmons) who think that they can only profit from the old system. Maybe that’s so if you consider the excess money they want so that they can maintain their fancy cribs and bling.

    Bye boys…the ship is sinking.

  5. Myrodushin

Yeah I never really knew Wyclef’s music but I’m going to make a point of staying away from it.

    Never heard of ‘em .

Wyclef is a dissapointment in a number of areas. He supported the overthrow of Haiti and sponsored a very one-sided film for it. I’ve heard his father was an ambassador and family has connections to this administration.

That’s a problem for a lot of world’s poor who do listen to rapper’s and hip-hop artists’ as if they were spreading the gospel. Only with Wyclef he’s spreading and supporting policies that hurt them the most.

This is just one more in a long string that want to keep things the same.

Maybe Limewire Pirate Bay and others should hold a world-wide party.
I bet the line up and attendence would be much more impressive.
