Rumored to be leaving long-time home Warner Bros. and forging a deal with concert promoter Live Nation instead.
The air of death continues to swirl above the heads of the record industry as we know it with news that Madonna is planning to leave her long-time record label home of Warner Bros. in favor of a deal with concert promoter Live Nation.
Though she still owes Warner Bros a new CD plus a greatest hits album, the move will allow her to eventually partner with Live Nation who, for $134 million, will be allowed to distribute 3 studio albums, promote concert tours, sell merchandise and license her name.
What’s significant about the deal is that Live Nation is essentially going into business with Madonna rather than the standard relationship where music artists feed at whatever trough of revenue the record labels provide.
It’s a further indication of the changing nature of the music industry and just what sort of service record labels are needed to provide. No longer required to distribute content, the longtime “gatekeeper of music” is now little more than a mass marketing machine which so too is also becoming outdated.
With other big name acts like Radiohad, Oasis, Jamiroquai, and Nine Inch Nails also deciding to forge their own music futures, one can almost hear record label excess gnashing their teeth over what has to be an increasingly tough job — maintaining the status quo.

I thought she started her own record label.
yeah maverick records. owned by warner.
Hahahah this is sweet…
I honestly don’t think Warner Bros cares too much about Madonna… she hasn’t done anything in FOREVER.. and frankly she sucks. This is only decent news honestly. She isn’t taking the big step to direct-release to her fans (if she has any)… that’s what is REALLY going to make a difference. Like Radio Head NIN and possibly Oasis. Hopefully other big names will fallow soon.
I agree that she sucks but the more big name artists that leave the better…no matter who they are.
What I love about the exodus from the old “Big Records” business model to a new leaner meaner artist controlled model is that it makes sense from both ends. It doesn’t matter if you are a big time act or just small fry that the record companies would never even notice. Check out the story on this small time artist and how he makes a buck: http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/news/2007/10/coulton
There is no doubt that the more big name acts that follow the lead of these artists the more the RIAA record companies will be damaged. If the general public ever catches hold of this concept of RIAA vs. NON-RIAA music they will be sunk. Big name acts can change the perception of the average music fan.
Personally I’m going to buy the Radiohead CD just out of principle. Send a message people… think of all those free tunes you have downloaded… now you can “payback” by showing
… support for a new model that leaves out the RIAA scum and is more just for all parties involved. ooops!

PS: Artists if you are a dumbass on everything execpt on how to make music then you may need the RIAA otherwise do you own thing and YOU will own it.
Another one down more to go. Thanks Madonna. Fuck you RIAA.
