Italian Police Bust 11 For Running DC++ Hub

The IFPI announces police have dismantled the illegal file-sharing network known as “Discotequezone.”

According to a new press release from the IFPI, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, weeks of monitoring by the Italian Fiscal Police (GDF) have led to a major crackdown against an alleged illegal music file-sharing network in Italy.

The police were targeting a DC++ hub known as “Discotequezone,” and some 11 individuals now face prosecution and heavy fines following the crackdown.

Police have confirmed that the network administrators, plus seven people who uploaded large volumes of copyrighted music, are now being prosecuted. The raids, carried out during the past weeks by the Fiscal Police for Bergamo, were coordinated by the Public Prosecutor from Brescia, with assistance from the music industry anti-piracy organization FPM. This is the second stage of the operation which started in March with several servers seized by the police.

A total of 11 computers and more than 110,000 illegal MP3 music files were seized in the operation which was carried out between Rome, Milan and Brescia.

Under Italian Copyright Law, the 11 individuals involved now face very heavy penalties, with fines of up to 8.5 million Euros in each case.

Some 170 Italian file-sharers and illegal network administrators have been criminally prosecuted for music piracy in Italy in the last two years. Yet, as we all know, it continues to thrive and file-sharing is seemingly more popular than ever.

What it’s also interesting to note is that in the same press release the IFPI also reports how “In two cases, police found paedophile content being distributed on the P2P network.” It offers little detail or even proof to back up its claims, and yet still is abel to subtlety mix paedophilia and P2P in the same sentence. It seems trivial at first glance, but it does sort of hint that there is a casual relationship between the two.

The IFPI has long tried to find a way to demonize P2P, and after finally realizing that the whole starving artists thing isn’t working it seems they have begun to try different tactics to support their agenda. Calling file-sharers “file-traffickers” or linking them to paedophilia are just a few of the new tricks up their sleeves.

Strange I have never heard of this network and I use DC++ all the time. Well that sucks for sure anyways Italy is a HUGE spot for DC users though so I think Italy is still a pretty good spot to do work in the p2p biz.
