Demonoid forum moderator offers a quick step guide to circumventing the recent decision to block Canadians from visiting the popular BitTorrent tracker site.
As many of you are already well aware, Demonoid is back online, but has apparently been forced to block Canadian visitors after having been threatened with legal action by the CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association).
The site is apparently offline again after recent changes began giving them some problems. A new message on their HP reads that "The latest changes to the site are giving us some problems – We’ll be back soon." How long "soon" will be is still anybody’s guess.
In the meantime, for those Canadian users who aren’t quite sure how to visit the site without being blocked I’ve reposted a helpful guide from the Demonoid forums here for you to check out and use.
Please feel free to list reliable proxies that you use in the comments section below to share with others.
Guide for Canadians wanting to access Demonoid via proxy
As we know, Canadian users are restricted from accessing Demonoid due to current issues with the CRIA
I have put together a few pieces of advice for you guys on accessing the site and forums via a proxy. It covers casual use and also a more serious approach (using a shell account). Here we go…
CASUAL USERS:
Some proxies have been mentioned elsewhere. They are:
1. roboproxy
2. http://www.hideu.net
3. proxyninja
4. http://tools.rosinstrument.com/cgi-proxy.htm
5. http://temp12.co.uk/
6. http://anonymizer.nntime.com/
Another excellent and fast proxy is;
http://www.fastbypass.com
SERIOUS USERS:
There is the option of a VPS with Squid but this is really far too expensive, unnecessary and troublesome for most people so I won’t go into details for this
The best way to have a reliable and secure proxy is…
Step 1: Get a shell account with a hosting company (cheap ones are available for as little as $2-3/mth)
Notes;
* THE most basic shell package is all you need. Don’t get sucked into anything fancy
* Make sure your account will have SSH enabled when you ask for an account from a provider/hosting company. Inform them you want to use it in conjunction with PuTTY and they’ll set it up correctly for you
Step 2: Install another browser* (like SeaMonkey from the Mozilla family). You can get it here
Step 3: Install PuTTY. Get it here
Step 4: Set it up with PuTTY to surf Demonoid (and wherever else you need) through the shell. You’ll need a SOCKS 5 proxy setup in your browser for this. See the PuTTY FAQ here for info on setup
*BROWSERS TO AVOID:
- Internet Explorer is…well…a Micro$oft product and so you should steer well clear of it at all costs.
- Netscape is a piece of s**t that works badly and even worse through this kind of proxy setup.
- Opera is the only browser that doesn’t have SOCKS capability…so that’s why it sucks in my book.
