P2P Art Redux: Anders Weberg Discusses His Latest Work, ‘Transient’

Swedish P2P artist uses the BitTorrent file-sharing medium once again.

It’s been a little over a year since up and coming Swedish artist Anders Weberg released hist first “experimental non-linear film” on P2P and file-sharing networks for the world to enjoy.

Calling the internet the “streets of today,” he considers his work to be an expression of his love for “…street art, graffiti and performance art…” and uses P2P to take advantage of teh file-sharing medium and to put his work in in this ever expanding “virtual global gallery.”

P2P and file-sharing networks are slowly transforming the way that independent art is distributed just as it has with movies and music. Be it photography, film, or any of their other artistic endeavors, artists have a new paradigm shift in their hands that they can now utilize to bypass the traditional gatekeepers that have long controlled creative access to the public square.

On his website, P2P-art, Weberg describes what his art is all about. He writes:

(It is) Art made for – and only available on – the peer to peer networks. The original artwork is first shared by the artist until one other user has downloaded it. The original file and all the material used to create it are deleted by the artist. After that the artwork will be available for as long as other users share it. The original file and all the material used to create it are deleted by the artist.
There’s no original.

This is the key attribute of his work. Once another user has downloaded his work using a BitTorrent tracker site like The Pirate Bay or other file-sharing network like eD2K, he immediately deletes all of the original material he used to create it. From then forward it lives and breathes only so long as users share it with one another.

I had to chance to talk again with Anders Weberg and catch up a bit on what has happened since we last spoke and what his latest P2P art is all about.

THE INTERVIEW
Zeropaid:

What have you been up to since we last spoke?

Weberg:

Keeping myself busy in the studio working. I’ve also had a lot of exhibitions and screenings for my other work so this year just passed by. I’ve been so focused on the art projects and staying away from stuff I don’t feel like doing.

Zeropaid:

How was your last piece “Filter” received by both the P2P and art community?

Weberg:

The p2p art project for me is the whole process. An artwork is made, uploaded and then the original deleted. The work released is just one part of it all. There was a lot of focus on the film in both communities actually even though I got more comments from the art world regarding the ephemeral approach.

I had a strange experience this summer. I live and work in a really small town (39.000) and a good friend of mine was at a party in an even smaller town nearby where he overheard a conversation where a Swedish guy was telling a visiting British guy that he heard of a guy who did a film, uploaded it and then deleted it and they where like .. uh .. wicked and they discussed it for a while.

Then my friend jumped in and told them that it was me and that I lived 10 minutes from them.

That is amazing and that makes you once again land on your feet and realize that it’s a really small world and today theres no clear line saying that the “Internet starts here.” Online/Offline merges into each other more and more. And things like that also make me feel stronger about the project.

Zeropaid:

What was your inspiration for your latest work “Transient” and what does it mean to you?

Weberg:

Transient is a 45 minute abstract non linear audiovisual piece. In comparison to “Filter” that was based on the trauma involving my son this is not as emotional. Transient is an exploration of the ambivalence of the male gaze and gendered (dis)order.

Zeropaid:

What other side projects and ventures are you involved with?

Weberg:

I’ve worked together with Robert Willim who is a Swedish Cultural analysist, sound designer and PhD in ethnology in the last years on various art projects. The latest are www.Surrealscania.se and www.Beingthere.se and we are in production of two new art projects that we are going to finish this year titled Domestic Safari and Special Effects.

I’m also researching the possibility of releasing a film on the disposable DVD, or DVD-D, which self-destructs after a few hours. In that case I will only make one copy. The one who will get that film have to decide if he will keep it and not watch it or watch it once and then it will self destruct. I like that idea.

Also I’m also working on some short experimental films and other than that I’m traveling around giving lectures.

Zeropaid:

Is there anything else you’d like to mention?

Weberg:

The fact that the first film is still seeded after one year is fascinating. I wasn’t expecting that at all to be honest.

Here’s a few links to help you out…….

eDK2 link (dead?)

It’s also available as a 3gp file for your mobile phone.
