Demonoid Back Online, But Blocking Canadian Users

posted by soulxtc in bittorrent // 229 days 16 hours 34 minutes ago

Looks like the CRIA had a hand in the affair after all.

Well, it looks like things are somewhat back to normal on Demonoid, for now the site is up and running like days of old. Yet, it seems as though the world's second largest BitTorrent tracker site did run into legal problems after all, for a message on it's HP says that it's now blocking all canadian traffic in response to legal threats from the CRIA.

That's right, it's now blocking all canadian traffic.

After a week of speculation and rumors swirling about as to what had happened, it now seems that it was properly reported by a Dutch news site that Demonoid had been targeted by the CRIA, the Canadian Recording Industry Association.

A message on Demonoid's HP reads as follows:

Downtime

We received a letter from a lawyer representing the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this.

Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.

So it would seem that we in the US aren't the only victims of traffic blocking as has happened to us previously with sites like ISOHunt and TorrentSpy.

It's yet to be determined what further action the CRIA will take since it seems highly unlikely that it will be satisfied with token visitor blocking that can so easily be circumvented with proxies and a whole range of different tricks and tactics.

Either way, it's nice to see that Demonoid's back again. Now I only hope that its decision to move to Canada proves to be the right one after all. Time will tell.

**UPDATE:

As user by the name of Boyan wrote to me recently asking if I could include some contact info urging Canadian Demonoid users to to write to the CRIA and express their anger with its recent moves against the site. I'm not sure that they'll listen at all, but it certainly can't hurt to at least voice your opinion.

From the CRIA site:

  • #1    Yep, it sucks if you are Canadian and being blocked from a site that is in your own country....but there are proxies to get around that.

That is just letting the stupid record companies have their way! Why should people do THAT when there are proxies and other ways to get around it??

It is the PRINCIPAL of the thing.

People should not take this lying down.

  • #5    the best thing about blocking canadian users or US users (in the case of Isohunt, etc.) is circumventing them with proxies. it keeps some pressure off the sites we know and love and at the same time still enabling those with the know-how to use them. The record companies/software companies have to realize people aren't opposed to paying for things, especially the majority of "Pirates" It's we're (IMO) opposed to ridiculous prices ($30 for a cd in Australia?!?!? - $3,495 for 3ds max - $399.99 for Windows Vista - the list goes on and on) I understand these companies are trying to make money and have employees to pay etc. but, that doesn't mean they have to rape us in the process.

  • #6    It's good for Demonoid anyway, like the other poster said, look for another site or try Torrentleech, but the way I see it, as soon as stuff stops being so expensive. The less Piraters there will be. Sucks for Canada though, lmao.

  • #7    All this blocking going on. Are these so called democratic countries heading the way of China and the likes? Do we have to go back to the old days of IRC ? Proxies will work for now, but they will find a way to prevent this happening for sure. TOR should work though with Azureaus.

So what do you propose we do about it? Whether it's the principal or not, that's wasn't my point - my point was for every Demonoid that gets targetted by the CRIA, RIAA, MPAA or whatever the fuck, there are about 10 more sites just like it that nobody knows about (but are about to discover very quick). Has anybody even noticed that Suprnova is back?? I'm NOT taking it lying down, trust me, but what am I to do if I'm not up to speed on proxies and all the rest of it - cry? No way - in all honesty, the only thing I personally used Demonoid for was for Howard Stern - and I've found four other sites to get it since Demonoid went down - use your resources - and scan some of the forums - you'll be surprised what you find - or get invited to....

  • #10    I found this interesting. Trying to "Digg" the article and I got this, "This URL has been widely reported by users as being regularly used to spam Digg's submission process and cannot be submitted at this time." Coincidence? Or paid for by the CRIA? I've heard of companies hiring people to digg articles and what not so is it really that unlikely that someone could pay to block something from being heard?

I will TELL you what I "would do about it" either LEARN HOW to use a proxy or go to another site! Apparently you want to bitch about not being able to do anything, when there is plenty you CAN do.

No, I don't expect you to cry, I expect you to act like someone with a brain and learn other ways around this. If you cannot do that, then too fucking bad for you!

Just take two minutes to actually READ BACK what you typed and then read what I said and you'll soon realize it's YOU who needs the brain, not me...go ahead and waste your time trying to crack proxies on a site that is probably going to be history in two weeks...and evidently I need to stop wasting time posting here...

  • #17    I responded to the stupidity you posted. So don't give ME bullshit about your hurt feelings, when it is you that is being insulting!

If you learned how to READ, you would understand I told you a way to get around the ban...PROXY! And how the hell do you know that the site is going to be history in two weeks?

I really don't give a rats ass what you do.

  • #18    To bad Canada. I think there would have been a different outcome if the guy running the show at Demonoid was the same dude from TPB.

  • #19    Yeah I'm in the USA which for the first time I can say thank god because it's not us taking shit. I better get all the shit off of Demonoid that I want, while I still can...it's really sad but their time may be running thin.

Btw TOR works in Azureus becuase I've tried it and it's quite nice but the problem is it doesn't really work on private trackers as much because you frequently jump nodes, so to stay logged in, you have refresh the site pages frequently. On the other hand, it's a charm for public trackers.

  • #20    I'm using the http://strongvpn.com VPN service to avoid censorship. Perfect service, with that one I have encrypted tunnel and nice support. In the case I use OpenVPN service my mobile devices work with it, too. My iPod for example. And do not use proxy! I used some of them, the quality was terrible and the connection speed was so poor...

  • #21    Guys demonoid id back. http://www.demonoid.com/

It was up today with this message.

    Newspost - Apr/11/2008

    Welcome back!

Since a few months ago, Deimos, the site administrator, lacks the necessary time to take care of the website, because of personal matters he's been needing to attend to. For this reason, he has decided to leave the site staff.

Before leaving, he assigned a new site administrator from among his friends to take care of the site. The old moderator team will continue helping with the site, unchanged. We will try to keep running everything just as it always has been.

The trackers and website seem to be working properly, and should any issues arise, they will be taken care of as soon as possible. The site might be going on and offline over the next days as we work out any problems.

Welcome back, and enjoy your stay!

    - Umlauf

    Demonoid Site admin

But still all torrents are there and all are old.
