Cinematube and SSUpload are the new targets of its war on piracy.
It was back in June that the MPAA started to go after video streaming sites, with YouTVpc and Peekvid being the first to feel its wrath. Today it was announced that it has decided to go after SSUpload.com and CinemaTube.net as well.
The lawsuit, filed a few days ago on behalf of the major studios, feature links to hundreds of movie titles, including such recent releases as “The Assassination of Jesse James,” “Resident Evil: Extinction,” “The Brave One,” and “Good Luck Chuck.” They’re all CAMs mind you, but it sure beats having to download them and maintain your share ratios in the process.
Interestingly enough, a “Who Is” domain search of Cinematube.net’s servers indicates that the site’s located in Malaysia. It also averages more than 24,000 unique users each day who view more than 85,000 pages of content. The fact that it’s in Malaysia may be its saving grace, but who knows since its also the country that was so eager to take the MPAA’s counterfeit DVD sniffing dogs, Lucky and Flo, for a test drive earlier this year.
Now a similar domain search for SSupload.com reveals that its servers are are located in Arizona and averages some 55,000 unique daily visitors who view more than 190,000 pages of content per day. If I was the Admin of this site I’d start running right now.
“We are putting illegal Web operators on notice that they are not above the law and will face serious consequences for their activities,” said John Malcolm, executive vp and director of worldwide anti-piracy operations at the MPAA.
It seems to come at sort of a silly time since it was announced just a few months ago that profits actually increased by 8% last year. It seems that the MPAA likes to count what it could’ve made alongside what it actually did.
Either way, it’s tough to try to support these types of sites if they run ads on them as well. It’s one thing IMHO to to serve up pirated content to users, but its another thing entirely when you seek to profit form it as well. I’m all for the free flow ideas, data, information, content, etc., though I draw a line when it means making a living on the back of others hard work.
For those of you that haven’t checked out either of them before, I recommend doing so while you still can. SSUpload has a decent CAM of “The Assassination of Jesse James” that’s worth checking out, and CinemaTube has a CAM of “Eastern Promises.”
