Has Demonoid Been Shut Down by the CRIA?

posted by soulxtc in bittorrent // 433 days 22 hours 16 minutes ago

Unresponsive for almost 2 days now, a Dutch website is reporting that the popular BitTorrent tracker site has been taken down by the Canadian music industry.

According to a Dutch news site, Demonoid has been taken down due to the efforts of the Canadian Recording Industry Association.(CRIA)

There's no word yet on what the cause is, but it's being speculated that it was ISP ad not site admin related.

It was for a similar reason that Demonoid decided to leave the Netherlands for a server host in Canada back in June of this year. The Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN intimidated its ISP enough that it eventually caved in and stopped hosting it.

Now it would seem that the tactic has worked in Canada as well, making the future of Demonoid uncertain at best.

I think they ought to cut to the chase and move the site to Sweden. The weather there can't be that bad can it?

Stay tuned.

  • #9    ok and one more -- www.p-i-s.com -- palestine -- all these hosts are good choices for demonoid or anyone else wishing to have a bit-torrent tracker or forum warez site

  • #10    Wouldn't pressuring an ISP to shut down a service be considered extortion, an act that Demoid could sue for???

  • #11    @Mountain Rage

The ISP could probably argue that it can host whomever it pleases.
posted by soulxtc 433 days 15 hours 11 minutes ago
  • #12    No but they could sue the CRIA if they were putting pressure on the ISP to stop their service.

  • #13    Frankly, Demonoid has been down before and always came back swinging. They may just relocate if it is trouble with the authorities.

  • #15    It ain't looking good now is it...a little bit too long in my opinion, with no news from the site I mean.

I hate to join in with these 'conspiracy theories' that all seem to be based on a single news article in the dutch press. Yet the longer we see nothing from Demonoid or it's admins, we have to assume the worst.

Either that or they just woke up one day and thought' This sucks, let's just stop doing it and go and become accountants'.

    Could be.

Yep, Canada is just a stones throw from Hollywood and everyone else looking to eliminate piracy.

  • #17    I read that this CRIA is not really connected to the Canadian music industry. Instead it is some US organization calling itself Canadian. As a Canadian that makes me very angry if this is true. Also as a Canadian it makes me very angry that US companies are sending lobby groups up here to bully our government to change Canadian copyright laws. The whole thing is just wrong. The industry needs to stop being such dinosaurs and start using the net as a retail tool and price their product accordingly. The artist themselves also need to ban together and sell their product privately and stop letting the greed driven media industry do it. It is a new world out there in cyber land. As for Demonoid I hope the rumors are not true. I love Demonoid.

i am getting a blank page instead of the non existent domain message

  • #19    If CRIA is connected with U.S. companies - Yeah, I can see where Canadians should have a minor little revolt about that. That's a little too close. It's bad enough that every article mentioned about Alberta Sands talks like it's in the U.S. We don't own 'dog sleds' (lol!).

  • #22    4 days still no word, I would like to crush the Cria back in to the scum they congealed from. Demonoid shall return, it must, for all the thousands of users hungry for torrents and a tracker where will they go? in the mean time somewhere elce, I liked demonoid for its Educational hostings and so on to replace what i learnt in school, this that makes the world somehow a better place, for me anyway. Who ever cared about the Cria

  • #23    at this point, im convinced its just hardware failure. im also pretty sure the lack of word from anyone from demonoid is intentional as its quickly rallying the whole p2p world against the CRIA without them doing anything directly in this case. the tracker is back up now, so things are getting better; which is something that wouldnt be happening if any of the darker theories were even a little true.

  • #24    I hope they come back, if it is related to pressure being put on them in Canada they should just move to Sweden or some of the other hosts being suggested above.

  • #25    I hope they come back so badly! I have a t-shirt with their logo, but whenever I wear it I want to cry :(. When they come back online, DONATE to them if you can. I think I might do a double major - the second being CompSci, so I can help wage the anti-P2P war.

  • #26    CRIA no longer represents the Canadian Music Industry! All the Canadians have pulled out, and it is only a hollow shell of the multi-nationals. Apparently, while it had to do with the fact that the multi-nationals made all the money while the artists starved....

  • #28    I for one refuse to believe that such an amazing torrent site could be taken down that swiftly and without resistance

  • #29    Apparently folks it really is a-coming back!

    Hooray!

You will notice if you have any torrents running with the demonoid trackers in them, the tracker is responding again now. Well, not just responding but working as it should, giving peers etc.

The website is also now showing a message so things are looking up.

(wow, it is so nice to have a relaxed page here to comment on this rather than that torrentfreak site with so many idiots condemning demonoid, its owner, Canadians and just about anyone they can...it's not a nice site that one. this will be my new haunt as it is much better and the news is clearer too :)

  • #30    Well well. it seems that no one has posted this yet. CSTC, cant stop the canadians. post this in every thread you download from demonoid. and yes you can access demonoid via proxy. either use Privoxy or site anon, proxy my site, etc. just google it. or use the onion network of proxies. its a good idea to block ads and IPqueries anyway. remember CSTC. just CSTC no thanks nothin just CSTC. a banner or bold or multi colour is fine too but those 4 letters only. thank you.
