"Their mission is to spread the word that our music should be free."
How dare the ASCAP put words in our mouth!

Earlier this month Slashdot presented a article regarding how some people choose to believe a particular issue is factual esp after being shown that it is not and become entrenched in that belief. It comes as no surprise, to me, ASCAP would continue to wage war on Free Culture.

The whole idea of copyrights is completely outdated and ludicrous. What if every worker insisted on being paid multiple times for a job they did 30 years ago? Should a typist get paid for every letter she typed every time that document gets backed up or included in a new publication? Should a firefighter get paid royalties on every fire he put out for the next 50 years? Should a mechanic get paid royalties on every brake job?

Copyrights made sense a few hundred years ago when an author sold his own books, books were expensive and time-consuming to make, and authors had to bear the cost of publishing and distributing themselves. Even software has reasonable expiration - the computers go obsolete, and the operating systems change. Music too, becomes obsolete, as tastes and styles change. Copyrights should last no more than five years with everything else going to the public domain.

Music companies should stop blaming low sales on piracy. Low sales figures are exclusively the fault of the record/movie companies in not offering what people want to listen to and watch. It's apparent if you listen to the Billboard top 100 for each of the last 30 years. Back in the 1970's nearly every song had a different style, but today the focus is on groups that all sound alike trying to fit a cookie-cutter mold. The search for money has replaced good music.
