Gnucleus 1.7 Released

“Gnucleus is an open-source Gnutella client for Windows. The latest version has been under development for some time and we are proud of the new features this version offers to all our users as well as stability and performance enhancements.

The major addition to 1.7 is SuperNodes (Ultrapeers), basically the goal with SuperNodes is to cram more users into the same space by consolidating Gnutella clients under SuperNode hosts. Gnucleus’s implementation of this feature is compatible with the SuperNode specs that other Gnutella clients use like BearShare and LimeWire, so on the SuperNode level all our Gnutella clients are compatible. Gnucleus does not implement something called QRP though which LimeWire uses. This was done because QRP does not support sub-string searching which we felt was important to the file sharing community. Over the next month we will compare clients with and without QRP and decide which is a better way to go.

Another new feature is Scheduling, which lets you tell Gnucleus to run on the Gnutella network at certain times during the day. This is useful for people who want to run Gnucleus only at times when the load on their local network is low, like at a college someone might configure Gnucleus to run at night so during the day academic use of the network would not be bogged down. Or at a company so day-time business traffic would not be affected.

Many more fixes also, here is the changelog for this release.

Some more info about Gnucleus… Gnucleus is the oldest active Gnutella client. It is not run by a company and is developed over the internet by normal people who just like to share files. The Gnucleus engine is at the core of many file sharing programs already such as Morpheus and MyNapster, but remains unattached from their development. Gnucleus also offers a LAN version to people who want to create their own private gnutella network, usually college students who are blocked from outside file sharing networks use this. Currently there are many colleges around the world using GnucleusLAN, some with over 2,000 users.

As always we are looking for more interested developers and people with resources. Share, Develop, and Enjoy. Thanks for your support.”
