MPAA Wants a UK CAM Piracy Crackdown

After success in getting legislation passed in Canada, Italy, Japan, and the US, sets its sights on the UK.

Today MPAA head Dan Glickman is scheduled to meet with various government officials in the United Kingdom to discuss efforts to persuade them to introduce anti-piracy legislation that would make illegal movie camcording a criminal rather than a civil offense.

“The UK is the largest international market in terms of studio revenues [outside the US],” Mr Glickman said in an interview with the FT. “It’s an extremely important market to us, but piracy is very significant there.”

He claimed that illegal camcording has been a top priority because some 90% of bootleg movie copies are CAMs..

“The thing that concerns us the most is that because the average movie costs so much to make a film often only makes money when it goes to DVD,” he said. With pirated DVDs on sale in street markets costing far less than at other outlets, one of the studios’ main revenue sources is being hit.

Glickman is scheduled to meet with Margaret Hodge, the new UK film minister, as well as advisors to Gordon Brown, the prime minister, and representatives from the UK Film Council. Unfortunately there’s no word as to whether or not he’ll mention the record setting $4.2bn Hollywood made at the box office this summer or will instead stick to his doom and gloom script and show arbitrarily contrived figures about what it COULD have earned.
