MPAA’s AntiPiracy Dogs Appear in NYC

Lucky and Flo take Manhatten.

After having helped in the seizure of millions of dollars worth of bootleg DVDs across Asia, despite threats from "syndicate bosses" and others upset with their efforts, Lucky and Flo, the MPAA’s much heralded DVD-sniffing antipiracy dogs, have made an appearance in NYC to apparently demonstrate their abilities as a warning to the city’s pirates.

Instead of training the dogs to sniff out REAL THREATS like explosives or drugs, their trainer, Neil Powell, 61, of Newcastle, Northern Island, a dog trainer for 35 years, taught them to detect polycarbonate, the polymer used in DVDs.

The MPAA claims that 43% of movies illegally "CAMed" in the US last year were done in NYC movie theaters, but it fails to say how many of them are then made into physical bootleg DVDs versus digital uploads for P2P and file-sharing networks. I guess the distinction is irrelevant to the MPAA and it merely wants to go after the guys trying to profit from piracy.

“Most illegal DVDs, and much piracy generally, starts with illegal camcording — just the simple act of taking the camcorder into a theater and illegally taping,” Mr. Glickman, the association chairman, who was secretary of agriculture in the Clinton administration, said in a phone interview. “That’s why the issue is so critical.”

The dogs are being used to look for stashes and troves of DVDs in areas like warehouses and airports. “They can’t distinguish between pirated and nonpirated DVDs,” said Mr. Glickman, who owns a 3 1/2-year-old beagle named Sammy. “I’d love if we could do that, but we’re not there yet.”

In any event, NYC has to be much nicer than the alleys of Malaysia.

Well i guess the so called pirates could pour bleach or anyother strong scent amasking agent around to throw off the dogs sense of smell doesnt take a genius to figure this out.

  2. Shackles

Its funny how far the MPAA and RIAA will go to stop piracy. This method can be easily avoided. Seriously they make me sad. They can try as hard as they can however piracy will continue. Fuck off **IAA.
