"Save a Film" campaign works to digitize and upload academic films to a searchable internet archive in order to preserve and make available to the public.

The mission of The Academic Film Archive of North America is to "acquire, preserve, document, and promote academic film by providing an archive, resource, and forum for continuing scholarly advancement and public exhibition."

They also work to "document and archive historically important films not specifically in the academic genre, including anthropological, ethnographic, and medical subjects" and is the only institution in the US dedicated to documenting the history of this endangered film genre.

It is in this spirit that they are soliciting donations for their "Save a Film" campaign to help in their efforts to digitize and upload films from this genre to the internet so that all may have access to them.

Different types of subjects from this genre include: Animated, Art&Avante-Garde, Business & Industry Documentaries, Dramatic, Ethnographic (African, American Indian, Latino, Middle East), Music & Dance, and Science films.

To get involved all one has to do is select a film from their chronological shows pages, or easier yet, from their pre-defined eligibility list.

Sponsorship is then based as follows:

  • 400 feet reel (up to 10 minutes) $110

  • 800 feet reel (11-20 minutes) $154

  • 1200 feet reel (21-30 minutes) $198

  • 1600 feet reel (31-45 minutes) $244

It's not exactly cheap, but sometimes good deeds never are.

Also to note, the AFA has no paid employees, so ALL DONATIONS go to film preservation projects.

To get an idea of what films are being preserved and to of course check out some for yourself, check out the Academic Film Archive of North America site and download a few clips.

I reccomend the campy "Sun Flight," it reminds me of middle-school for some reason.

  • #1    I like these films, they can be lots of fun to watch and see ideas of the past and old production quality. You can find them by looking up 'American propaganda films' on your favorite file search.
