School orientation now includes warning about illegal file-sharing.As part of their fall semester 2007 orientation this weekend, the thousands of students moving into residence halls at the University of California, Berkeley will learn that if they use campus computer networks to download copyrighted music illegally, they'll soon find themselves without an internet connection. Under UC Berkeley's new "Learn before you Burn" campaign, students caught illegally downloading music will automatically lose their dorm internet connection for one week or longer. Prior to this, students caught downloading copyrighted music only lost their connection if they did not respond to warnings from residence hall officials. "It's our job to make sure students who live in the residence halls fully understand the consequences of illegal file-sharing," said Dedra Chamberlin, manager of residential computing services at UC Berkeley. "We don't want students to end up facing a lawsuit or $3,000 fine and saying, 'Why didn't anyone warn me about this?'" As part of the "Learn before you Burn" campaign, dorm residents attending Cal Connect orientation workshops will have to view a video about the benefits of legal downloading and the consequences of illegal file sharing. The video apparently includes a dramatized testimonial from a student who was caught sharing files illegally. 16 UC Berkeley students have gotten notices accusing them downloading music illegally since January when the RIAA began its nationwide campus crackdown.
