BitTorrent Inc. to Offer FREE Ad-Supported Video Streaming

Starting next month, will offer its top 10 movie and TV titles but, plans to eventually expand the service it to its entire video library.

I and other shave frequently discussed here how free ad-supported video streaming is really the wave of the future, for it will act as an effective counterweight against piracy, being free, and will also allow content owners and distributors to make money on the service via advertising generated revenue.

BitTorrent Inc. rolled out its video download store back in February to mixed reviews on selection and pricing, with many finding the service a poor alternative to piracy based on both of these traits.

Pirates wouldn't mind viewing a few ads in my opinion, so as long as it means they can watch content for free and on-demand, which is obviously similar to the way they are already accustomed to watching their favorite movies and TV shows. In fact, as I mentioned before, this is what I think will be the future of video content distribution in that it will be ad-supported and on-demand. People no longer have the time to sit and watch a TV show at a dedicated time and place, and as for movies, trying to find a title to view at time and place of your choosing can also be cumbersome.

"It's inevitable that the traditional broadcasting infrastructure will be replaced by (Internet) infrastructure that's on demand," said Aram Sinnreich, managing partner of Radar Research,

a consulting firm that works with media and technology companies.

BitTorrent Inc. will be abel to reach consumers that may not have access to physical DVD rental stores and retailers or to cable and satellite TV services that offer the kind of content they are looking for. With BitTorrent Inc.'s new ad-supported streaming service it won't matter. The whole world will have access to the same free content, and may perhaps be the viable content option that pirates have long been hungering for.

BitTorrent Inc. plans to show ads before, after, and in each video, apparently similar to broadcast TV but are still be experimenting with how to incorporate the ads into the videos themselves, which will be embedded in a web page Flash window. .

BitTorrent Inc. apparently plans to start out the service next month starting with its top 10 titles but, plans to eventually expand it to all of the titles in its video library.

All I can say is it's about darn time somebody listened.

  • #1    Watching an ad before the actual file might not be that bad. It';s kinda like the yahoo news video do, the playa ad before you can watch the CMM news file, etc. We'll see what happens
