New "Secure Content Downloader" shares pieces of data with other users.
Always one to take advantage of new and emerging technology, even if it’s sometimes too little too late, Microsoft has quietly rolled out the Secure Content Downloader to allow users to more quickly and easily download Customer Technology Previews (CTPs) from its website.
No doubt becoming aware of by now the convenience and speed that BitTorrent can offer content providers, Microsoft now allows visitors to utilize the technology and download content quickly and effortlessly.
It bills the MSCD as a P2P technology where "Each client downloads content by exchanging parts of the file they’re interested in with other clients, in addition to downloading parts from the server."
- No matter how great the internet’s demand for the file, you will always be able to make progress downloading.
- MSCD lets you download content quicker than is possible without peer assistance.

It furthers:
Some MSCD clients may be connected to each other via peer connections, forming a ‘cloud’ of clients. Pieces of the file you are downloading are sent through these peer connections between clients, as well as through connections with the file server. As a member of the cloud, your computer both serves as a client and server to other members of the cloud. Data destined for the cloud may be routed through your computer and sent to other cloud members. The other cloud members connected to you will be able to access only pieces of the file you are downloading via MSCD – they have no access to any other data on your computer.
Notice the words "cloud," "client," and "server." I mean if it wasn’t already so blatantly obvious these terms provide the final telltale clues. Cloud is of course swarm, and then client and server in this case refer to seeders and leechers.
Microsoft always come on board eventually after a given piece of software technology has proven merit, so I guess this means that BitTorrent has finally gone mainstream.

I would not trust a MICROSOFT p2p program if they gave it to me! Sorry but I can just see them working for the MPAA or RIAA or both!
Um Meyou unless I am confused they are using it solely to distribute their own content. Its not a universal client so you should not worry about them working for the MPAA or RIAA on this one as it doesn’t involve that content. On a seperate not however Microsoft does work with both as a content distributer as well as a DRM pusher so it isn’t far fetched to expect hidden measures in windows that would allow them to control your content. If you want to learn more about past measures look up trusted computing and Microsoft paladin.
Yeah it isn’t like all the chaos surrounding uTorrent for instance. This so they can distribute Microsoft things.
Even IF they are only using it to distribute their own content….I would still not trust it. How do you know what kind of measures they put in Windows to gather information from you when you use this client? Spyware…..Microsoft style perhaps?
Microsoft already has some mechanisms in place which send back info about places you have visited etc.. And this current implementation of p2p is not what you should worry about its Microsoft as a whole organization. If you don’t want them spying on you you will need a mac or a linux machine. Sadly if they ever go through with trusted computing even that won’t be enough as Intel Apple Microsoft etc… are all a big cartel for that push.
If you want something to go down let M$ “embrace” it
Good step sometimes windows update is a bit slow (under 700 KB/s) I have better speed on shareaza than that.
Hopefully they will update it so thatif a windows update server is not abel to give us good speed that at least a p2p connection can help out.
