VIDEO: NBC Wants the FCC to Regulate P2P

VIDEO: NBC Wants the FCC to Regulate P2P

Blames file-sharing for lost viewers and decreasing share of the primetime TV audience.

It often seems that the one who complains the most is usually also the one who listens the least.

Rather than come up with new and exciting TV programming that viewers want to actually watch on a regular basis, and also embrace new methods of content distribution, it appears NBC has decided instead to simply complain about the latter and do nothing to address them both.

The formula for a successful TV network should be a no-brainer. it should focus on content, content, content, and delivering it to audiences wherever and whenever they want to view it. By. refusing them either of these options all one does is guarantee them an artificially propped up system based on false desires that’s at risk of crumbling at any moment.

I’d argue that the reason the show “Heroes,” for instance, is so popular is precisely due to the fact that it’s available on P2P. People who didn’t get into the show from the very beginning wouldn’t have had a chance to become hardcore fans for there’s no options by which to catch up on missed shows other than P2P and file-sharing networks.

By hearing of the show through word of mouth, people were able to go and download the season’s episodes that they missed and thereby become the loyal viewer that NBC cares so much about.

Without this option, many wouldn’t have been exposed to the show and “Heroes:” large fanbase would certainly be a fraction of what it currently is.

At least we haven’t heard them blame P2P foir robbing poor corn farmers in a while I guess.

Probably most don’t realize it but the original reason for the FCC was to make sure that radio and TV stations didn’t interfere with each others’ signals. That’s right. It was purely technical. Monster stations like KDKA in Pittsburgh (the first radio station in the country) needed to be reigned in. Their 50000+ watt signals were drowning other stations out. So stations had to be regulated in power and needed to stay on frequency.

So much for the History lesson. Somewhere along the line the FCC became the moral watchdog for TV and terrestrial radio. Right wing groups didn’t want “dirty” words to be said. Nudity (on TV) was a no-no. Now even the Left Wing demands that the right words be said (witness the recent burning at the stake of Don Imus).

Now enter the big networks. You’d think that after Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” a few years ago they’d know better. The FCC drove terrestrial radio to the heavens (satellite). Now only those living in the technological stone age listen to radio that comes over the airwaves.

Satellite file sharing. Hmmmm. I wonder if it’s possible?
