Privatunes Lets You Anonymize iTunes Plus Tracks

Say goodbye to the iTunes user account name and e-mail embedded in your purchased music tracks, and make sharing music with friends and family safe again.

A while back Apple launched iTunes Plus to much fanfare and signaled that perhaps a new era of DRM-free music was upon us.

Then proving that sometimes good things do have a catch, it was discovered that each of the .m4a music tracks it offered DRM-free is embedded with the users name and e-mail listed on their iTunes account. This of course makes it a risky endeavor to put them up on your favorite P2P network or BitTorrent tracker site or even just to share with family or friends who may choose to do just that.

Certainly there are always trade offs in life but, having complete control over the music you purchase at the cost of having them branded with such personal information is not exactly an easy one.

Well, now there is an answer to this problem with a little program called Privatunes. Privatunes allows you to “Erase personal information from your legally purchased iTunes Plus tracks” and makes them safe for using where and when you please. If this is too simple a reason for using it, the site offers its own “top” 5 reasons why you should.

5 reasons to erase private information from my legally acquired iTunes Plus library:

1. Am I still a child who needs his pencilcase and schoolbag tagged with my name?
2. I bought the damn tune, but someday I may want to sell it (hey, how is it more stupid that selling old CDs ?).
3. I just have a thing for privacy. Is it dirty?
4. How the heck do I know it’s not gonna be shared on P2P networks by my 6 year old step sister???
5. I thought good customer-seller relationship meant something like… how do they say, “trust’ ?

Privatunes 0.9 is available for both Windows and Mac OSX. Now make your music “safe” again.

Looks like a good program but I have a better suggestion: don’t buy I-tunes crap in the first place.
