Adopt resolution titled “Supporting Comprehensive Plan to Combat Global Piracy and Counterfeiting of Goods.”

Last week at the 75th Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) in Los Angeles a resolution titled “Supporting Comprehensive Plan to Combat Global Piracy and Counterfeiting of Goods” was adopted that lends their clout to the fight against copyright infringement.

Spearheaded by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the resolution commits its members to increasing anti-piracy resources to fight global piracy as well as against those criminal organizations involved.

“The adoption of this resolution serves as a reminder that the theft of copyrighted works affects the smallest of towns and the largest of cities,” said RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Bainwol.

“Piracy costs cities significant tax revenue that could be used for municipal priorities and results in lost jobs and wages for U.S. workers. In addition, city officials must be aware of the exposure to dangerous criminal organizations that actively engage in this theft,” Bainwol continued.

In addition to the commitment to increasing anti-piracy resources and strengthening policies to fight IP theft, the Mayors’ resolution also calls for its members to implement tighter internal policies and practices that detect and prevent piracy – such as the use of illegal peer-to-peer applications – on government-owned computers.

“This resolution also represents another indication that technology is a viable tool to protect the integrity of computer networks and prevent the theft of copyrighted works,” added Bainwol. “I applaud the U.S. Conference of Mayors for their commitment to preserving U.S. intellectual property by setting forth these proactive initiatives that should no doubt serve as a model basis for other cities. Their recognition of the corrosive effect that copyright theft has on the U.S. economy is essential to advancing anti-piracy efforts,” said Bainwol.

The resolution seems particularly odd considering the whole gamut of more pressing issues mayors face like crime, unemployment, illegal immigration, and urban sprawl. I guess the fact that the resolution was spearheaded by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who resides in the proverbial heartland of the entertainment industry speaks volumes about who is really behind the resolution and for whom it was intended to placate.
