Demonoid is Back Online

posted by soulxtc in bittorrent // 427 days 22 hours 4 minutes ago

The popular BitTorrent tracker site is up and running once again, and has moved from a server in the Netherlands to one in Canada.

Last week I reported how the Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN was targeting the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker site in its fight against intellectual property theft and how this new legal challenge combined with a HDD drive crash had made things seem bleaker than ever for one of the more popular tracker sites around.

BREIN had been apparently targeting Demonoid's ISP Leaseweb for hosting the site and thereby led to Demonoid's decision to seek out a new server host. An exasperated BREIN even gleefully commented that "...it strongly seems that disappearing the site is the consequence of this intimation." It also criticized the Netherlands reputation as a "safe port" and in particular Leaseweb, and that this all must come to an end.

Well, it seems that Demonoid has decided to save itself the hassle of a protracted legal fight against BREIN and has decided to pack up its belongings and move the site to a server in the Canadian province of Quebec.

A quick trace, as shown below, shows to where the Site has moved.

Demonoid.com: 209.44.123.21

OrgName: Netelligent Hosting Services Inc.

City: Laval

StateProv: QC

Country: CA

So far the process would appear to have been a smooth one but, Admin does confess that it still has much work to do to get it to where it was prior to both of the events of a week and a half ago.

Edit: We are getting thousands of new visitors which is causing the servers to overload. We are disabling a few of the site features to help the situation, but we'll probably need to order faster hardware, so it might be a few days until everything resolves.

Let's just hope things work out for them with the site's new hosting location and that they can focus on bringing things back up to speed.

The only thing I'm now worried about is the fact that it will certainly garner additional scrutiny from Canadian and American law enforcement and copyright lobbying organizations now that the site is in their own backyard and removed from the relative "safety" of the Netherlands.

TorrentSpy and ISOHunt have both pledged to begin using FileRights to automatically filter copyrighted content from their site, so it begs the question of "How long will it be before Demonoid is pressured by lawsuit to do the same?" ISOHunt is also hosted in Canada and will surely add weight to an effort to filter Demonoids copyrighted content as well. Let's just hope that day won't come anytime soon.
