Wants the US Govt to crack down on copyright infringement.
MPAA head Dan Glickman testified before Congress yesterday during a hearing titled “Trade Enforcement for a 21st Century Economy” about the need to better enforce intellectual property rights overseas.
“The U.S. motion picture industry depends heavily on revenue from overseas market,” said Glickman. “Improvements in intellectual property rights enforcement and market access that free trade agreements have required of our trading partners are crucial to the industry’s continuing contribution to America’s economic strength, both at home and abroad.”
He proposes a five point plane for a new “anti-piracy surge” to combat the problem:
- Use free trade agenda to force countries to comply with intellectual property rights
- Provide adequate resources for overseas training and education;
- Ensure that the US agencies charged with negotiating and enforcing trade agreements have sufficient resources;
- Improve our laws to require foreign governments to improve their compliance, especially if they are the beneficiaries of US preferential market access treatment
- Increased congressional oversight to hold US officials charged with enforcing our trade agreements accountable for their decisions.
I don’t know that this new plan will be any more successful than any before it but, its sad to see us continue to browbeat the rest of the world, who by in large have much smaller economies and average annual income, because they choose to make cheaper copies they can actually afford.
If 1/6th of the world lives on less than a dollar a day and the average global income is about $10 bucks a day, is it any wonder that most of the piracy the MPAA complains so much about occurs overseas, outside of the world’s largest economy?
