Irish High Court orders ISPs to identify P2P users

Says they must reveal the names of 23 Irish people suspected of illegal file-sharing.

The Irish Recorded Music Association took the country’s ISPs to the Irish High Court yesterday to force them to hand over the names and addresses of 23 Irish people suspected of illegal file-sharing, and by days end they had prevailed.

IRMA director director-general Dick Doyle said: “This is the third time we’ve been to the High Court to get the names and addresses of people who are sharing music over the internet and yet people are doing it.”

“We’ve also run campaigns to tell people that file-sharing is wrong. It’s stealing from our artists and affecting the livelihood of many people in the industry,” he said. He added that the “IRMA would do everything in its power to ensure they are brought to justice.”

The ruling is a product of a six-month investigation by the IRMA to crack down on illegal file-sharing. It maintains that 5 of the 23 targeted alone are responsible for 108,000 illegally shared files, with 1 even responsible for more than 37,500.

The High Court gave six ISPs, Digiweb, BT, Smart Telecom, Irish Broadband, NTL, Eircom and Imagine, 22 days to provide the IRMA with the names and addresses of all 23 people suspected of illegal file-sharing so that the IRMA may start legal proceedings against them.

To date the IRMA has sued some 66 people for illegal file-sharing
