Are Linux geeks and MS Corp. both helping digital media fans?

We all know that diehard Linux users don’t hold much in their hearts for Microsoft and Windows users. But several news stories popped across my desktop today that seem to build a lot of ironies between the Linux community and Microsoft corp…

In Linux community news: (1) “Two longtime Linux enthusiasts are calling on geeks everywhere to join an ambitious new political action committee designed to blunt the lobbying might of Hollywood, Microsoft and the Baby Bells.” [from Newsbytes.com] … (2) “Spooked by Hollywood-backed legislation that seeks to regulate technology, Linux geeks plan to launch a political-action committee that fights back … The goal is to ensure that legislative attempts to protect the interests of companies such as Walt Disney and the Baby Bells don’t stifle technological development.” [from ZDnet.com]

In Microsoft corporate news: “This holiday season, a new breed of Windows PCs will land on store shelves. The question is whether people will go for them. Hewlett-Packard, Samsung and some other PC manufacturers will be selling upscale Windows XP computers with Freestyle, an additional software module from Microsoft that lets consumers use their PCs to record TV programs like a TiVo set-top box. Freestyle PCs will also come with a remote control.” [from ZDnet.com]

The most notable irony here is that Microsoft is working on a Linux package (with much publicity) while this abovementioned Linux lobbying group names Microsoft as one of its enemies. Not to mention that the gap between Windows and Linux GUIs is shrinking considerably. And now Windows is offering up their PC-based version of TiVo, which will open the door to for the less techical to dive into the digital media life that Zeropaid readers already live in. However you read into all this, the above-linked articles have impact on the file-swapping community.
