Grooveshark adds more content, inks deal with Magnatune

DRM-free P2P music sharing network adds a 3rd label to it’s ever-growing catalog of artists.

Grooveshark, the P2P music sharing network I’ve covered quite extensively here, has now signed an agreement with Magnatune, an independent, online record label and music catalog of over 200 independent recording artists, to begin offering their content to users of the site.

“At Grooveshark we really believe in the progressive approach that Magnatune has taken as a label,” said Sam Tarantino, founder and CEO of Grooveshark. “This is a mutually beneficial partnership that can help them grow and allow us to expand our ever-growing catalog of artists.”

They’ve already signed a licensing deal with the UK’s V2 Music Group, and Naxos, the world’s largest classical music label, making Magnatune the third content partner to sign on for the new Grooveshark music service in as many months.

“The indie music world is perhaps the hardest hit by illegal music sharing,” Tarantino continued. “By partnering with Magnatune, we hope to stem the tide and provide a safe haven for the young and independent musicians out there who want to have their music heard by their fans, yet still get paid so they can pay their bills. We also will be strengthening that intimate direct connection between fan and artist, right to the point of musical conversation.”

Magnatune, dubbed “the first internet era record label,” is an ardent supporter of fair-trade music, working to treat both its musicians and its customers fairly. It also shares all revenue equally with recording artists, making it a perfect fit for a site such as Grooveshark where both users and artists are compensated for their contribution to the site.

“We applaud Grooveshark’s approach of making the largest possible catalog of music available while compensating artists and the members of their community,” said John Buckman, Magnatune founder and CEO. “It’s clear to us the music industry needs to change, and that’s why we founded Magnatune, and we’re excited to see a unique distribution channel like Grooveshark to complement our efforts.”

Grooveshark is unique to say the least, and by adding additional content partners it only makes the service that more exciting. No other music service rewards contributors with FREE content, and no other service rewards users for fixing song tags, flagging unwanted files, or simply reviewing music.

If you haven’t already, I urge you to take a look at Grooveshark.
